Total Noob...Appreciate your thoughts

I totally agree with pulling being recommended, but on a couple of other threads here on RIU people have discussed using push through, and Phreshfilter say you can push or pull with their filters.

From what i've read, good reasons to pull are: using the prefilter properly, using all the carbon in the filter equally, pushing can result in odour leaks...

But I've never heard of the pressurising/heating issue you raised. Could you explain this for me?

This horse thirsts for knowledge

PS: sorry to hear bout ur ticket. Do they do roadside drug tests where u live? Cheek swabs that pick up weed/amphetamines and MDMA have rolled out here. Just another reason to be paranoid in my jurisdiction
The swabs a joke, keep some mouthwash handy:)

Keeping terminal junction temperatures down helps with the efficiency. They're on arctic 11 cpu coolers ($11 on amazon) I could probably push 100w through each diode but efficiency drops dramatically.
As far as the cfl thing...A watt is a watt. It either get converted into light or heat. I would imagine a $100 250w HPS setup is cheaper and cooler than 800w worth of cfl!
250 w vs 800 w?

250 w vs 800 w?
I knew that was confusing after I wrote it. What I meant was you can get the same yields from a 250w HPS that this dude got off of 800w of cfl's...it seems ludicrous to use 3 times the amount of watts and heat than necessary. Maybe ludicrous is harsh..i just don't understand the choice

Well, I thought you might mean that, but I don't know. Is 250w HPS that much better?
All about the PAR, and I have said before, that's why we build!

I am not familiar with the PAR lux of one vs another to really say. But, if he is doing it at $90 a month for electricity that is a lot better than I.

Btw, when the OP said, "...appreciate your thoughts" it's kinda like letting the genies out of their bottles, huh? Careful what you wish for. It may confuse.

But, those 50w Crees...oh Brother, I'm there. We build!

Everybody has different situations and living arrangments. Im on point with what i do so why should your opinion get you a mayors position? What if i dont want to use what you use. Im simply laying out what can and will work for others. This aint no battle rap contest this is different people and different styles if growing. Either way it goes my electric bill is 9 ten dollar bills a month a dollar to the blessing i receive at harvest sir...

This is a rap battle. Do you only grow one at a time!? I'm gonna assume you have a small space as well. If I only got a qp every 3 months, id be dry for at least a month.

Huh? I can root bind a 2.5 gal container with a 3 foot Vegger in 8 weeks. But, that is inert coco.

Next time I will, transplant into 5 gals a few weeks before light switch. Outdoors I've seen them planted in 50 gal plastic garbage cans, in holes so the don't fall over.

So, I don't know much about roots yet, but I know I can bind them.
I've been watching the roots for awhile after harvest,we had several different size containers last season,we grew 99 plants out door and the project used a mix of what ever we had at the time from 8 gallon smart pots to 10 gallon air pots to the standard nursery pot of 5 gallon. Some of the girls had to wait awhile in their 3 gallon starters a little longer than we would have liked because we had no cash for more roots organic and they did get root bound at 4 foot tall, but as soon as they got to their final home of 10 gallons they were happy again and looked good up to late september(over head at this time)
Never did see the gang in the dry room that season...as some shit bag rippers took the girls from us in the middle of the night.

Thats why you hire guys like me to be night security and garden hand. Always wanted to work out west. No theifs on my watch.
But on another note, I saw a grower use 10ft chainlink with razorwire at the top.
For the money and time investment, I would personally do the same, but I have also installed large fences.

hey guys, beg your pardon for the absence, had to concentrate on something else for a bit.

with foamboard, if i'm using it to build two cupboards, and sealing with tape, is the foamboard going to be strong enough to hold the weight of the lights?

also http://www.amazon.com/Apollo-Horticulture-GLK600CT24E-Digital-Dimmable/dp/B00521B894/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1425394127&sr=8-4&keywords=cool+tube this link is for an american product, is it right to run in australia? will an international adapter suffice in getting it running? it can run at 240v which is what we run in australia.

You can make shelves our of playing cards, if you know what you are doing. :)

Really, foam board is such great stuff. I have used for many purposes. So, let me teach you to fish. Then you will know how to figure out foam board structures, OK?

- span
- span end support
- rigidity placement

That is all you need to know.

Foam board at what thickness? 1 cm or 2 cm?

I treat it exactly like plywood, but, with only about 20% of the breaking strength yet with, a lot less sag for its on weight. Would you make a shelf out of 1cm plywood, 12cm wide and 2 meters long? Not a useful one.

So, plywood has little sheets glued together in what is called a structural sandwich. Very important to understand. Foam board is a structural sandwich (I hope you don't mean bare foam) The covering glued to each side, make a 3 piece foam and paper, structural sandwich.

So, the way I tackle this is to ask the question a bit differently. It is not, "will it work?"
With structures, it is "How to make it work?"

I would cut a test shelf. I would put that across a pair of chair backs and start destructive testing with my exercise weights, bags of sugar, bricks or whatever, and I would find out the load break on one layer of shelf at my design span.

If I am 50% over at least of what the design load is, I am good to go.

Else add another layer to your sandwich. :) Make sure you tape layers together on the edges so you have your structure.

OK? Next one. Would you take a piece of plywood shelf and just nail into the end, thru the side panel. NO! You need a cleat for the end to rest on, yes? Weight bearing structure. Nails through foam, are not weight bearing.

So, cut 1cm x 1cm foam board strip and fix that with little nails and then tape the hell out of it to the side panel.

It is so light weight, this box you are building, you can afford to make it beefy by taping structure where you need it.

Hope it helps.

bro, i picked up 60mm thick foam board at bunnings last week... its 6cm thick! The igloo I built on the deck stays above 20C while its 4C outside.

Sold as under floor insulation for $60, gets you 11 pieces that are bigger than 1m x 40cm.
