Transplanting (soil to DWC)

I want to transplant some of my babies from soil to a DWC system. My question would be; what would be a good age to do so? They are between 1-3 weeks old right now.

right now would be the right time,it sucks no matter what,but the less roots you have too mess with,the better.
 
explain to me how are you going to get those developed roots into the dwc basket (pot) with out fucking up the roots?
i dont think is possible.

start off fresh on dwc.
 
Well, I've read about a lot of people doing it. Just dig the plant up, crumble any caked dirt, and rinse the roots off in water. The only bit of information I don't have is when they do this, or if there is an optimum period.....
 
you can do it at any time in veg,but i would think the less root mass you have,
the faster it will take to the transplant.

i have only done it a few times,not something id do all the time,but it will work.
 
Do it while they're small. Smaller is better. The bigger it is (rootball and plant) the harder it's going to be to rinse off the roots without causing damage. One way I did this was to put the whole dirt ball in my basket with hydroton then rinse it out until the water is clear.
 
I did this once, talk about bonsai, it took a month for the plant to recover and start growing again. Yes it can be done, however it would be much faster to just start from seed of drop a clone into a dwc setup.
 
i did this once took me like 45 minutes in the sink trying to be as easy as possible .......the plant i transplanted was bout 8 inches tall .............real pain in the butt........but i burried it down deep in a big net pot and a week later good as new
 
i start mine in soil and move to dwc and i transplant withing the first month when they are big enough to handle a little stress and there isnt a massive root ball to fight with
 
I transplanted one from bad soil once into rich composted soil with lots of organic nutes and it took right off after a couple of days, but basically if you don't stress it out too much it can be easy to go from soil to DWC, best time to do it is early morning or just before the lights go on
 
i tried that some time ago. they were started in soil, roots were well established after about 14 days. i put them into a cloner and all the roots basically died off and new ones grew. took a couple of weeks to get re-established before putting them into DWC.
it was explained to me that the root structure for soil vs hydro is different. hydro has very fine root hairs and soil doesn't. going from soil to hydro it has to grow the fine hair structure. from hydro to soil works great.

that was my experience. dont know if the explanation is true or not but seemed to make sense at the time
