Statehood is not popular on the island from what I have gathered. I have a bunch of friends there, even some patriotic military veterans and I have spent some time on the island and on Vieques and Culebra. What I gather from talking to people and reading is that PR is a nation and that the majority favor independence. They see statehood as the finality of any hope of independence. There have been very serious revolutionary movements throughout the history of the colonization of that nation.

Seriously we should be able to run big bird as a dem and just show pics of ppl from Katrina and Maria and tell them "this is what happens when you elect republicans" and that alone in a sane world would assure his landslide victory... but we do not live in a sane world...

i got issue with puerto rico
they are a usa territory but they never want to be a state it 1952 to now they want what every other state wants from feds but they do not want to kick back into the system .........it is 2017 about to be 2018 shit or get off the pot

honestly helping the whole world is not our problem we have enough at home .......they want a faster response become a state otherwise sorry we got shit at home to fix first

how that unamerican .......that is just simple minded ppls catch all now a days ........what i said is true they have had 65 years to become a state but they do not want to because they are greedy they want the help from the feds but they do not want to pay back into the system as a us territory that is exactly what they get to do .....and they can do what they did to the money down there u make it there u can not take it if u leave to come back to USA it all stays in a bank account in their system until u die and state can take it

You need to look at the Supreme Court rulings and subsequent legislation regarding the unincorporated territories.

I cannot believe that the worlds greatest Military were not feet dry on my island IMMEDIATELY after Maria destroyed my homeland setting up cummunication arrays as well as setting up solar panels so folks can have power, get food to those stranded. I'm fucking going out of my mind not knowing almost 2 weeks later how my family is doing on Salinas, Puerto Rico I have been able to get in touch with some of my peeps in Bayamon and Ponce but not Salinas.

Most of my peeps are coming stateside to Florida and will most likely stay here and because we ARE American citizens and will be able to vote guess what party won't get their votes! Get ready for a mass exodus of Puerto Rican's from 'la isla' and the inevitable nightmare the Republicans will have in Florida.

For quite some time now the Republican Party has enjoyed the support of the Cuban community but that is changing there are no more Cubans coming to the mainland and if they do they are illegals who can't vote so while the Cuban voter base remain flat the opposite will not be true for Puerto Rican's. 2018 & 2020 can't come soon enough.

Heck, if you could just convince the ones that are already in FL to register and vote, you could already tip the scales. Sadly, only about 30% of the population votes.

Really? Ok, so what % of eligible voters are registered? What % voted in the mid terms? What % voted in the general?

Not denying that. I hope they are located safe and quickly. My only point is that there is a significant population of untapped voters already in FL. Hopefully they have motivation to change things given how badly the republicans are f'in them.

I agree... his hardcore support I'm sure applaud it as Puerto Rican's speak Mexican and have Mexican sounding names...

But the soccer mom who tends to vote GOP may have second thoughts... the average joe who's not hardcore but votes GOP cuz he owns a small biz making him think he needs to be a republicunt... they may...

I will admit that Katrina helped me break away from being a conservative. I was raised liberal but became a religious conservative in high school, college, and early adulthood. I for that period voted GOP for "family values" reasons (makes me gag now). But seeing W's apathy to the largely minority Katrina victims enraged me and began (along with other discomforts) my journey to being a self chosen left wing progressive.

So I'm hoping out of this tradgedy, some of the good that could come from it is other people like me seeing behind the veil of conservative bulkshit lies... that they truly are a party completly dedicated to the 1% but needs to make a veil of reasons to get non 1%ers to vote for them. The veil is a lie, I seen it, hope others do to

A lot of people are confused over the response, or lack thereof. If they had cared, they had close to 5 days notice that a (second) cat 5 hurricane was going to make landfall. They could have prepositioned supplies in areas where roads were likely to be closed. They could have hospital and supply ships loaded and ready to go on a moments notice. They could have suspended the jones act in advance knowing that massive aid would likely be needed. And they could have done a LOT more to evacuate vulnerable populations.

They didn't do any of that in advance. They still haven't mobilized much of a response. What they have done they had to be shamed into.

Contrast that to the effort that was mobilized in the 1940's to keep west berlin alive after the soviets blockaded it. Planes landed so close together that they had to return if they missed there assigned landing slot. There was no second chance to get them down. Everything from food, to medicine, to fuel, to coal was brought in for two years to keep the city alive.

Now we have a big ocean in the way. The atlantic ocean (Trumps excuse). And people are suffering and dying. American citizens.

And most news outlets barely cover it unless trump gets in a tweet storm and mentions it. He pretty much gets away with it being a good news story. Disgusting.

And that doesn't even begin to cover what the physcal control board is rumored to be up to; privatizing utilities and other government resources for soviet level prices. Oligarcs are us.

I don't feel they (corp media) are ignoring it anymore, but feel they did for a while... my guess is as media can access the rural area it will become more intense...

I also feel this is part of trumps or his hidden handlers plan. His vicious cold hearted attack on the San Juan Mayor,reguardless of her critique, is a bully method. It's reported other mayors feel same way but are scared to speak out because they fear attack back by retaliation or not helping them the way they could.

This is the conditioning an evil narcissistic genius is pulling on us. Either he plays dumb and is a genius or there's a hidden handler that is a genius. He conditions leaders such as mayors or governors even when they have a critique, demand, or complaint to learn to package it as a compliment... over time the masses will hear more and more compliments and the fickle majority will be suckered into thinking he's become really good even tho he seemed not so good in beginning... he's basically forcing ppl like mayors or governors in crisis to be propaganda machines for him, out of their concern for their citizens immediate need...

This is how he wins a second term and his chosen successor wins a third n fourth and we become like the counties he has praise for their leaders: authoritarian ones

And yet some folks wills say they never seen it coming! This is avoidable but also very possible....
