Talks? WTF? We are trying to negotiate peace with people who started the war in the first place by killing over 3000 civilians?

This makes no sense. What are we going to offer them in return? Money? Weapons? Why would they even want to negotiate? They have the upper hand. Obama has already announced we are pulling out of Afganistan. There is absolutely no reason for the Taliban to negotiate anything in good faith.

I think Obama still believes that his aura allows him to change things around the world by simply talking to people. We see how well that is going with Iran, Syria and other countries.

This is not going to end well....

What I am saying is that we are pulling out of Afghanistan anyway... We have no bargaining chips other than to give them money (to buy weapons) or weapons.

I agree with you. At this point we need to just get out. We created the problem in the first place. The Taliban were the rulers of Afghanistan if I remember correctly. And when they wouldnt hand over Al Quaeda we went in and took over. I guess we didnt win that fight if we are back to negotiating with them right back where we were in 2001.

Afghanistan really isnt a country, it is a bunch of tribes. It is almost impossible to win a war of this type. We would have to occupy Afghanistan indefinitely. The US literally ignores the poppy fields being grown to not upset the locals. It is insanity.

Time for us to GTFO.

Our military is for defense, not foreign nation building.

No. The Taliban and Al Queda are not the same thing. We are negotiating peace with the people who were indifferent to Al Queda having training camps in their country but then offered to hand over Bin Laden after 9/11 but we went to war with them anyways.

Foreign aid, reconstruction, etc in exchange for them not overthrowing the government the second we left. Basically, cash and supplies in exchange for not embarrassing us and creating more problems so we have to invade again.

It's a divide and conquer strategy as well. The taliban is not a unified group at the moment. There are many different sects with many different positions politically. We are trying to get the most well armed as well as the more moderate taliban sects to switch sides. If successful then at the least it divides the taliban in half, possibly marginalizing them as a group entirely. If a large enough % of taliban fighters can be bribed to switch over to the coalition government, the more hardcore Al Queda supporters in the Taliban get left out in the cold.
