The state I love in, Washington, is the highest or maybe second highest (california may be the highest) taxed state in the union, luckily we also have more higher paying jobs, and the highest minimum wage. Ugh don't get me started on gas...so it sounds pretty darn similar. Hell the weather where I love is comparable to yours too. Although this summer we went 81 days without more than .1 inches of rain. That was pretty sweet.Living costs are absurd because of the governemnts attempts to claw back money to keep on top of their debt. Gas and electricity prices went up 20% overnight in january, and next month are going up another 9%, petrol is now at roughly £1.40 a liter.
As to food, you are mistaken, while a lot of folk just eat shit, if you are willing to spend, then the food available is simply outstanding. But when i say spend, i mean spend. To put it into perspective, on the low end of the scale, a single red bell pepper will cost me $1.53 US. for a good piece of sirloin/striploin, it would cost me $42/kilo. The quality of our produce is superb, but utterly unaffordable for 99% of the population.
As far as food I meant more along the lines of England's cultural foods. Go to Japan eat sushi, go to vietnam get pho, go to England get...bangers and mash? Blood sausage? I may be all wet behind the ears, but I've seen a few British cooks admit to the cultural food as not being the greatest in comparison to other ethnic style cooking.
