Is a 20 ton press really worth it for the price over the 10 or 12 ton presses?

So I am looking to make the jump up to a pneumatic press from The Nug Runner for bigger applications during busier times like fall harvest/etc. I have been doing research and I am not sure if it is worth it to get a 20 ton. I have 5x3 LowTempPlates and of course a sufficient air compressor; I just need the press itself which I am only willing to spend $500-600 on at the moment.

I understand that these presses really should not be pushed to capacity and I have been told that, at least for the medium sized presses and up, you should keep at around 50-60% capacity to preserve the press & etc.

If what I have learned from these individuals is true about capacity, is it even worth it to pay for twice the press whilst only getting an additional 3-5 tons extra? My guess would be that those few tons won't show me too much extra in yield or much else.

I have two on my list so far (links below). Any input would be extremely appreciated as I am trying to get a press on Cyber Monday in a couple of days. Is the Dake or Black Widow better? Is it worth it? Is there a press you recommend that is at least 10 tons and pneumatic capable?

I've heard nothing but good things about the DakeB_10, supposed to give good yields and is considered extremely durable maybe this help I'm also looking myself so if you found out any helpful information go ahead and send it my way I by no means know everything in fact I really don't know much hahaha

The biggest difference between them is probably the fact one is a floor press and the other a bench top press. I have that Dake B-10, as a benchtop, and another benchtop H-frame from Grizzly. Both are 10-ton units (I'm using the Grizzly to pre-press). I like the Dake a lot. The workmanship is better than the Grizzly. And, 10 ton is plenty. 20's overkill. Honestly, I'm not convinced more than a couple of ton makes any difference at all to rosin yield. Shipping is a bastard on these though. If you get the Dake, look into getting it from Amazon (US$312). The company that ships it doesn't have extra off-loading charges, as others do (this can be as high as $80). As a Prime member, mine shipped for free. $312 delivered is a deal. Drop $400 on plates and you're squishing. Good luck.

BTW, I need to be conscious of how long I have my Low Temp plates running, especially on the Grizzly press. If the ram gets overly warm, the hydraulic fluid thins and leaks a little. This hasn't happened on the Dake yet. But, I have some fiberglass material coming tomorrow to wrap the nose of the ram, in an effort to reduce direct heat transfer from the plates.

Thanks for the pointers and suggestions everyone! I apologize, I was in Alaska on vacation for a couple of months.

Good news for me, I was able to put more towards the press and I went ahead and ordered a Baileigh HSP-20 ton for about $750 + $250 for tax/freight totalling $1,010. A friend of mine however DID buy one of the two I initially asked you guys about and gave the nod to the black widow. No complaints from him so far.

My ready to press setup w/ prices:

Baileigh HSP-20 ($1,010) from mile-x.com

LowTempPlates 5x3 w/ 1 controller ($400) from lowtemp-plates.com

Porter-Cable 6 gallon 150psi ($100) from eBay

25 pack stitch-less 90 micron filters ($28) from lowtemp-plates.com

2 pack medical grade silicone mats 11.5"x16.5" ($20) from eBay

10 pack N52 Neodymium magnets ($20)

All other materials needed I had already but the total for this came to about $1,578.

Thanks again RIU

Very cool. The Baileigh HSP-20 is a really nice unit.

Yeah, that baileigh 20 looks like it's some serious quality. I might give my black widow to a friend and upgrade. But don't get me wrong, the black widow is pretty killer for the money, def gets it done. Only problem i have with it, is the design of the bracket that holds the ram. It's wobblier than fuck. I put clamps on it, but prob gonna put some welds on it.

Yeah, that ram cylinder support design looks pretty dodgy. As you say though, a couple of welds will solve it. Both of my presses have bolts connecting top and bottom support plates. But, it looks like your press has no top plate. Regardless, it looks like you have a great setup.

Unfortunately, I plan on keeping the nugrunner for my smaller personal runs. If you're interested in it and skeptical, don't be. It's an amazing little press perfect for anything around 2 grams or under, although, I have pucked up almost 5 grams with nice results.

Absolutely the best decision I made. Very happy that I decided to hold out and save for the more expensive Baileigh HSP-20. Great welds, USA made, great design with no obstructions or loose parts, and the regulator has worked nicely as well! In all, If you can save the money or afford to pull the trigger on a Baileigh, without a doubt do it. I promise you will be happy and won't look back. I'm a happy presser so far! Note: I usually will only press up to 10 tons and don't really see the need to surpass that but that's just my opinion based on my results. If need be, cut some cost and grab a 10 ton Baileigh.

Love the anodized red LowTempPlates brotha! 4x7's? Yeah, my buddy who ended up getting the widow had that same complaint, but that was the only complaint he had! Being a welder for Bath Iron Work (builds the destroyers & the new DDG ships) he is a welder by trade and was able to clean things up regarding those issues and is still loving it and (knock on wood) still yet to have any issues.

Thanks everyone for your pointers, pictures, and ideas. I will post content as soon as I can, I'm currently away visiting family and trying to get my 36'x36' barn revamped into my new Medicinal grow site. Things are moving fast around here! I'll have lots of content coming from tent grows, the journey with the barn, as well as everything rosin. Thanks again for stopping in. Stay tuned.
