When All The Hairs Turn Dark Yellow, Can I Cut Down??

so, im getting hella close to harvesting. i keep looking at a few things because im fairly colorblind. the calyxes are swollen, the trichs are cloudy, the white hairs/pistols are turning a dark yellow. about 50-60% are dark yellow, while the others are that translucent yellow, the color they turn after white, but a little darker then that. just one plant is doing this, the others are clearly a few weeks behind. the buds on the bottom are kinda turning too. will the hairs change another color after this dark yellow? like a redish/amber/brown color? that is what i have been told. i know there is a personal preference. but i want to achieve optimal THC production. not THC and the CBD. (after a few threads i found out i DON"T want the couch-lock narcotic high, unless its that strains characteristics). any advise with constructional answers will be rewarded with +rep. thanks in advance!!

use a 20-30x microscope. if you want a heady high (sativa like) then you wanna harvest at maybe 10% amber trichs with nearly all the rest of the trichs being cloudy.

you DEFINITELY dont want to harvest if half or more of your trichs are clear. thats just too early (pre-mature buds ruin the high and results in a smaller yield).

you should look for something like this: 80% cloudy...10% clear...10% amber. that should give you a very well rounded effect (imo)

remember pistil color has NOTHING to do with when its ready to harvest. its all in the trichs. for example some strains (ie. White widow) will still have several white pistils at the day of the chop even though all the trichs are mature.

i was told it is NOT all in the trichs. i dont't mean to argue, but i have told to not just look at the trichs. there is other factors involved, like the calyxes are a factor. and yeah, i have heard White Widow is a tricky one to judge. although, they say its an easy plant to grow. i have a 60x-100x magnifier. it helps, but it is hard to get a good look. i have to cut a little leaf off, and that sucks, i get headaches from it, lol! so basically, if the hairs have about 60% of them dark yellow, i should wait a few more days? so not all of them will change, bout 90%? 10% still white-ish-translucent-yellow, then pull? i will be throwing her in at least 32-48 hours of complete darkness, then CHOP!!!!

It's not _only_ about trichomes regarding harvest / maturity. But it is mainly about the trichomes.
You should also look at the calyxes (they should be swollen) and some of the pistils (if not all) should be receding.

You cannot judge it by the pistils colour.

I always harvest as close to 100% cloudy / milky trichs for maximum THC content.
(Amber trichs are a sign of THC degrading into CBN).

The strain, and wether it's a Sativa or Indica plant is what composes the high.
Sativa: energetic head-high.
Indica: couch-lock effect.

It's not as cut and dry as that, but that is the basic idea.
CBD and other substances also contribute to what effect you get.
CBN (amber trichs) usually manifests itself as a groggy / strange high and not very pleasing.

If you want a couch-lock effect grow a _pure_ Indica strain and harvest @ 100% cloudy.

ok so i started to see a few amber trichs. but still a few clear too. and only a couple of the translucent-yellow hairs, most of the hairs are a dark yellow, some are even a pinkish tone (on another plant, but that one is next to be cut i think). but hardly any that haven't turned yet. say im going to do the 48hrs of darkness, should i start that now? i have small buds on the bottom that do not look totally finished. is this due to having tall plants and having short plants, and having the light higher then it needs to be, so the little bottom buds wont get as much light and wont grow as quickly???? im debating putting putting it into total darkness tomorrow or the next day. im so close its silly. i feel like im over worrying. but these are my babies, lol!!

i think this is where i am at now. i wanted to do the 48 hours of total darkness. is this when i throw it into total darkness?

i think i may give her 1 or 2 more light cycles, just to be safe. i was thinking maybe Monday through her into the darkness. thanks again!!

not updated, but i have some from about a week ago. let me see if i can dig them up.... these pics are 4 days old. they look really different already!!

well, remember, these pics are about a week old. that is also why i think they need a few more days. in this pic i thought they were 7-10 days away. from the time i took that pic, to the time it will be on Mon. will be 7 days. so i guess, i could let her go til Wednesday between Saturday and probably be good still. i was going to take pics last night, but i ran out of time. tonight i will take some more pics and update.

OK!! updated pics, taken this morning. i had to pull the plant out of the tent to capture all the true colors. here they are. i have decided that Monday sounds good to start the darkness period. im thinking 2 days. i heard 3 is not needed, plus i did 24 hours solid before flower, and i was told they need 72 hours of total darkness at least once in there life. so im hoping that the 24 before flower and the 48 after should be efficient, i hope. they look real resiny already, almost wet looking. here they are!! oh btw, i see mostly cloudy trichs, and a few amber. its hard to see any clear ones, but im sure there is a few there. not all the hairs have changed yet either. those are about 50/50, maybe 60/40 (with the 40 being not changed).

Yes a couple days of darkness will make a difference! some opinions say up to a week most ive ever done was 3 days and boy they did swell!

and you started that right when you knew they where done? i have heard one of the White Widow breeds (cant remember who) has a tip on the seed info about leaving the plant in 2 weeks of total darkness before harvest. that seems a little extreme. i heard about someone doing it for a week. but i don't remember if he posted his results. i think Monday i should put her in total darkness for 2, maybe 3 days.

Great looking grow. You said she's a WW? you definitely have the finish line in sight now! GL. I want hear a smoke report when you after you chop, dry and cure.

nah, she aint a White Widow. i have WW seeds im saving for a later grow. this here is a seed i got from my friends seed stash. he had a buddy who was a grower in Nor Cal about 10 years ago. it was mixed in with some seeds not labeled. so, im not exactly sure what it is. unfortunate as it may be she looks and is a solid grower! smells almost familiar, but not at the same time. at first it was something i thought i have had before, but the more it grew the more it started to have a unique smell ive never smelt before. so you guys think i have a few more days?
