when to 12/12...

I've been growin my sativa for about 4 months or so, started out indoors but then let it grow to ~ 3 ft outside... I'm hypothesizing that if i were to leave the plant outside until it grew even larger, there would be a better yield at the end of the season, however i know that in my temperate environment, i've heard that since it won't bloom till late august as the daylight shortens, the season will end too quickly and not get the nice yield that i'm expecting. However that's not the only problem, I've been tryin to distinguish whether or not I had a female or male plant and have had no luck with that... right now the plants are getting about 15/9, so its quite a bit far away from 12/12 in the season...

So, i would like an opinion of some more experienced growers, would it be wiser to expose it to 12/12 starting soon, since it is already quite large, and it will give me a decent yield, if the plant is in fact female, or keep it to the end of the summer and try to see if the plant will get taller and produce an even better yield while risking keeping a male plant longer for no reason.

I would 12/12 it now. Expect flowering to take 4-6 wks, in order to get large trichomes on your buds. A 3ft plant with multiple branches will yield a few ounces, dont start 12/12 too late because if the weather gets too cold or the sun isnt out enough you could jeopradize your crop

4-6 weeks.......I think 8-9 weeks is more likely.....And that is a minimum.......And I wouldn't bring it inside unless you have sufficient light for a 3 foot plant.

ah i wouldnt plan on bringing it inside anyway, i was just going to give it a natural 12/12 by bringing it into a dark room after 12 hours came for that day... i was hoping to get more than just a few ounces :(, but hey, its the best bud i've ever smoked, and im sad that i wont even be getting any seeds from it :( ...

another question... i will be going away periodically, max 2 days away, will it mess up the flowering period if i give it 12/12 for 2 weeks and then go away for 2 days and it goes about 14/8?

I would 12/12 ASAP!!!!
If you have a girl and it is a mostly sativa it will take 4 to 6 weeks just to see the baby trichs....even outdoors in your area it could take 12 weeks to finish properly!!!!

The disruption of the light cycle may produce some male flowers....watch out!!

Best of luck!!!

well in that case, if its a female plant that produces some male flowers because of the disrupted light cycle, could that potentially create a hermaphrodite which will give me seeds?

yer lookin lonely here DJ....

I'm no expert..but I'll give it a shot with my (scary) limited knowledge...

I KNOW someone will correct me if I'm wrong. LOFL

If she hermed..she could toss out flowers and viable pollen..or the flowers could be sterile. If she has viable pollen she could pollenate herself and make seeds. This is basically "survival" mode for the plant in the wild from what I understand. She needs to continue on....and knows she didn't *get it* early on in life to make seeds...so she...um...takes care of herself. I think soma the breeder calls this rodelization...do a search if interested.

And they say boys 'er always playin with it! LOL. Yeah..right. snicker...

I doubt a few days of interrupted light schedules will make her herm...but as a sativa..(from my experience) she may herm anyway at some point down the line...especially near the end/after about 11 weeks or so of flowering(don't hold me to that!). Seems like everytime I've intro'd a sativa into the mix here I've found seeds in the other plants in the same room...even if I saw no visible flowers they were obviously there *somewhere*.

As for starting 12/12..I'd do it. As a sativa..it'll more than likely take weeks to even *start* making buds and she'll more than likmely STRETCH...so in the long run...unless you want a lanky tree that may not finish before frost hits.....let her put all her energy into flower as soon as possible.

coupla ideas..depending "where" she is and how easy she is to move/not move in/outside and where you live. (lotsa folks around/no one around...etc.)

Use a large BLACK garbage can to cover her...or..if she's talled than that...use two of em...plant down inside one...the other on top...secured. Bigger than that? Find a large washer/dryer/refrigerator box. If needed...cover it in plastic to keep it from disitengrating in the weather. STAKE IT DOWN AT NIGHT if you have wind/storms in yer area and it's in an exposed area.

make a pvc frame and cover that with black plastic....

lotsa ways to do it. Just takes effort EVERYDAY.

good luck

Yes, however the seeds will be hermaphrodites aswell so it's kind of a lose lose situation.

Leave the plant outside, im not sure why you think yoru area isnt warm enough for the plant to finish. 40 degrees lattitude is plenty warm enough, and you'll see the plant starting to flower by late july/early august sometime. That'll give you 8-9 weeks as you'll be harvesting sometime in early october. As for a hermaphrodite, i wouldtn worry about it bc its already been outside enough to adjust. If you're really worried look up your area on theweathernetwork.com and you can review the history of temperatures for your area over the last several years, but imo this is not necessary (plants are tougher as they age and can handle a couple frosts). Just leave the plant where it is and dont do anything to it (garbage bags etc).

leave it outside,
