I saw some "Plant & aquarium" T8 lights at the store the other day and i was wondering if those would work better that the daylight T12's that i have over my plants right now..
Any ideas?
Virtually ANY flou. with newer technology than a T-12 will help. But the technology for both T-8's, and T-12's are basically same principle as was used when they were created in the 1950's.
If you wanna bump up (and it's a serious bump), but check something similar to an 8 bulb T-5 unit like this:

These guys out out 40K lumens. Yeah, 10k short of a 400 watt HPS. But here's the really cool thing. Since they are flows. There are little or no heat concerns. Therefore you could potentially lower the lamp (HO T-5's) to within a few inches of the top of the canopy (way closer than you could get w/ an HID), which results in potentially 80K lumens.
BUT.... you're gonna have to come up off a few hundred beans. & Replacement bulbs are'nt cheap. But ENTIRELY diff world compared to the old T-12's, and T-8's. High output T-5 technology just became practical in the 1990's. Whole diff. world.
No disrespect to your current setup or anything. But I would say the difference between T-12's, and T-8's is negligible, as far as increased output & efficiency. Go for the H-O T-5's
