Why Would You NOT Grow Autoflowers? — The Commitment-Shy Hobbyist

I left a fewower buds on the Heisenbergs and one started to throw pollen sacs from being over ripe. I clipped some and let them dry.

I will start a amnesia auto and a Heisenberg and pollinate them both and hopefully have a bunch of seeds.

Have you breed before?

DEA is gonna kill that in August when they reschedule, they are sayin it will end recreational on a federal level

The reclassification would force Colorado, Washington, Alaska, Oregon and Washington DC — which have have made cannabis legal for recreational use — to revert to prescription-only cannabis status, the DEA lawyer suggested.

I have heard this, but also heard that this is really nonsense as going from a Schedule 1 to a 2 will have no bearing on what the states due as according to Federal law, they are already breaking the federal law...

And I couldn't agree more. Technique-wise, I am not worthy. But what I consider worthwhile might be good enough after all.

I've been on this site just a few days, and it seems that the range of topics covers the most casual growers up to seasoned pros and beyond. The last time I tried growing was many years ago in college, and it didn't end happily. So when I come back to growing now — now that I'm legally growing my own medicine — I'm taking a relaxed, casual-hobbyist approach to it. I welcome all of the great information available from the knowledgeable posters at the same time knowing that I'm not going to take all their advice on board simultaneously.

So what I've done is applied my rather ordinary gardening skills, along with a forgiving climate, an average amount of low-tech loving care, and Amsterdam's finest auto genetics. And it worked! I {name redacted} have actually produced smokable (pretty good, actually) smoke. A landmark in time has been passed.

And that's the humble joy of the hobbyist grower. If I was Home Depot and I could sell "Potting Stations" for 149 bucks a crack to "hobbyist growers," I'd certainly be doing so.
I agree with you, they will be selling these hobby kits in the future. It would be a great market for the window, much like the herb gardens growing.

They should just apply the 10th amendment for once which states that all powers not in the constitution go first to the states and the people and then to the federal govt.
So legally cannabis state law must and should always supercede federal law.
not that the government obeys laws..

I wish they would de-schedule this attractive flower and herb.

They are most definitely potent and able to compete with photoperiod plants.
Maybe random seeds but not clone only elites, the rudie they cross it with is basically hemp so they take the elite clone only and cross it with hemp the original clone only is much more potent than its offspring.

I'm in my first grow since back in the dark ages, when it was really, really illegal and my seed stock was probably as potent as the Crate & Barrel rug I currently have on my front step.

Now, of course, we have 21st Century genetics, and you can select from hundreds of different strains, each with its own unique characteristics. We also have 21st Century impatience, which means waiting forever — and most particularly delaying gratification — is not something people are willing to do.

Enter the AUTOFLOWER, the perfect choice for the indifferent gardener whose thumbs are neither green nor black.

Autoflowers' small size makes them particularly suited for outdoor growth when you have neighbors (I conceal mine behind the dandelions, which are bigger and more showy). And autoflowers' relative simplicity of care (plant, water, wait) meets my criterion of a hobby that's not too demanding.

I predict that as legal grows become the norm, the hobby cannabis growing market will center around outdoor autoflowers — because they're just so easy. Indoor grows will become the provenence of the extreme hobbyist, but every Jill and Jane will be able to brand their own home-grown from that plot right next to the tomatoes and zucchini.

People look askance at autoflowers' yield, because they're so tiny. I've personally only harvested two plants (I have 8 under way, each about 10 days apart from germination) and my dried/cured weight was a little over an ounce each. That's not a whole bunch, but an ounce of equivalent-quality weed would cost $300 from the local dispensary. And once you amortize your seed, equipment and consumables, it becomes effectively free.

There will always be the high achievers and the purists who will pursue indoor grows and the successful raising of cannabis forests with non-autoflower varieties that get 20 feet tall. And then there will be the pros who supply the dispensaries and recreational sales outlets.

But the day will come (and soon now) when Joe Average — remembering his old man's tales of youthful excesses decades ago — who be buying an all-in-one grow kit (just add water!) from Home Depot.
Short answer to topic line, because u can grow a lot more weed with consistency with photo's.

And that makes perfect sense. But not everyone values quantity -- or even consistency -- above all else. Some of us, so long as we know we'll end up with enought good dope (of our own growing), are happy to putter around like any hobbyist. So far in my experience (which began of March this year) every seed I successfully germinated has given or is currently growing toward production of tasty and potent flowers. And it's been fun.

About 3 years ago I got my medical card and like everyone does in legal states set up a top of the line 4x4 tent for way too much money and bought 5 Greenhouse Seeds Auto Northern Lights.

Well every silly auto myth was busted over the next 4 months. The last plant took an extra month to finish because I burned the shit out of it. It stalled and then grew all new leaves and yielded the most from the session. 4 ounces. It was also very potent and tasty after cure and every one around loved it. I got 14 dry ounces of very northern light like pot. Potent and earthy tasting. I am 48 years old and have smoked real northern lights in various forms in the 90's. And some more recently from a dispensary.

I also had to bend plant #2 as she would have been easily 5 feet tall left natural. She made huge colas all the way up the curved down stem. And every branch was chunky like the pics online I loved.

But all plants recovered from my newbie Incompetence and kept growing to a big finish rather than kill my yeild because of a race to harvest.

I will say the strains I grow non auto now are better. But not all photos have been. It is always important to have good genetics.

Sorry I don't have a pic handy. They are in an old phone. I can see if I can transfer them later. They surprised the hell out of my caregiver at the time.

I think they are good for some situations. But they took more energy to grow too.

I might try photos at some point -- I have one mystery photo growing now, but I don't know what to expect (hence the 'mystery'). But my grow area is very polluted with nearby streetlights, and I'm concerned that will screw up flowering. But, maybe next season. Too late now.

Autos were really meant for outside. To have a small crop in the middle of the summer while waiting for the big girls to finish.

they would fit your situation too I think.

Use a reputable breeder is my standard advise.

Since this is my first season growing, everything is an experiment, including which breeders to use. There are so many, and I only have a few data points so far. I wish my local dispensary wasn't so snobbish about autos (they won't touch 'em), because then I could get better advice about autos in my climate zone.

I whole heatedly agree. Have fun with it. I grow photos becaus only have a 2ft x 2 ft x 5 ft spot to flower so i cant grow autos or id only get like 1/3 as much smoke. I have a little area i also veg in. Allowing me to harvest every 8-9 weeks a fully developed large plant in the 2x2 area. I also dont have to buy seeds very often, only when i get tired of a strain. I actually have a mystery auto-flower right now in my veg area. Bought seeds and got 2 that just had a ? on them. One turned out to be an auto cuz its like halfay done flowering in my veg area on 24hr light haha. It looks pretty cute really because i didnt know it was an auto and was grooming it to get large so its a small little 6 topper. Probably wont be good smoke cuz its just under flouros, but its fun.

The newer larger autos can be topped to control height. I haven't seen him around in a while but @hondagrower420 had some nice topped autos.

When choosing a breeder take the time to look for grow logs and reviews to gauge how they are.

Sticking to the top ten or twenty list on seed banks is a good way to go for a bit and then branch out. Not saying its all fire but it will be very good smoke or they wouldn't be selling so much.

I found a bunch of random breeders I never heard of and found small packs of seeds cheap. I bought ten or more for like 5 pounds a pack.
