I love experimenting. Its defo half the fun with me. ... also, through experimentation ive found what works best for me in my particular situation. Not only the materials I use but the process of feeding, dealing with smells, drying and curing the bud etc has been a little experimental.
If you read my simple introduction to Hempy in the first post, I didnt even mention COCO. This was because I was completely ignorant about all the different substrates one could use in Hempy. I now believe that most of these substrates have different properties making them equally valid depending on your style of growing.
lol, yeah, i know what you mean and for real, my entire history in this hobby is one of experimentation and DIY, i'm handy and poor so studying how the pro's did it and attempting to replicate it on the cheap has been my path, ...and i've learned much more than i'd ever have learned if i'd just had a pocket full of cake and could just go buy shit.
...but the last couple years i've been focused on upping the ante while simplifying my style and methods, back in the day i ran 55x 1liter 'pot's' in a high-density micro-SOG under a 400CMH mounted inside an air-cooled SuperSun II, ...now i run 11 plants in 6liter hempys around a barebulb 600 and although i'm not running a 'SOG' exactly, i AM running a perpetual as i am lucky to have a 4 x 4 DR120 to veg in and so i flip the next run the same day as i harvest the last run, which coincidentally happens to be tonight, lol. ...i planned on sharing pics but i can't find the charger to my camera, lol.
Was wondering about hempy moms. Think I could do a 50/50 mix of Per/Verm or would there be a high risk of root rot? Also because of the higher mix of verm, could move the drain hole to 1 1/2 or even 1". Rez should dry evenly with the rest of the medium as long as temps were in check. Look forward to your thoughts.
i keep my moms in cut down 3liter gingerale hempy-buckets with grorocks or hydroton in the rez for the weight they provide (stability) and coco up top.
...here's a few shots of my old moms before i switched to hempys and gingerale bottles which are green so light shining through doesn't promote algae growth.
inerV, since you have a new size container, you may want to space your holes from the bottom of the bin such that a convenient water amount is needed to water (easy mixing/hauling). For instance with a 40L bin, dump in 10L (1gal) of water and mark that location, make your hole. Of course it will overflow when there is medium in the container as it takes up some space, but you want some overflow to freshen the res each feed. You may want to shoot for 0.75g water in each bin so it takes 1.5g per each pair of bins or 3g for each set of 4. It depends on how many bins you run. I've never seen a formula on how high the hole should be relative to height/volume of container, just the old 2" rule of thumb. Might as well use the hole height to your convenience if it can be had.
yeah, i agree positioning the drainage can be important, ...i don't have any data to back up my reasoning but i aim for about 15% of the container as my rez and again, i don't know that i'm 'right', it just seems to work for me.
