I just bought some 40L storage totes with the intention of converting them into hempys, i want to have a perlite res and top up with coco, there will be 4 plants in each tote, im just about to pile into research on making these but i thought i'd give WOH a shout first..
will i need a few hempy holes in these or will 1 suffice ?

i want to attach a hose type thing to the hole(s) to catch run off, any kits i can buy or any diy links?

Exactly what I thought when I saw it - looks like my ferret destroyed a foam cushion then vomitted on it! LOL
Tbh ... It not really what you can see that concerns me, its what you can't see.

I did wiki reading on PU foam, additives like colouring, or fire-retardants can be added during the manufacturing process. ... basically, if it doesnt combust when lit then its contains the fire-retardants.

the concern therefore will be, unscrupulous vendors may source waste material from factories without checking how safe it is and sell it on as 'Mapito'. Also, if the PU foam is sourced in China, then the supply chain may not be known or even trusted.

On 'wiki' this statement is made. 'Fully reacted polyurethane polymer is chemically inert' .... On face value that sounds positive but the 'inert' properties only applies to the PU polymer itself and not to the various additives that may be added.

I'm NOT a scientist so maybe my concerns unwarranted? Do we even care? It only matters if the plant is somehow able to transport any dangerous chems to the bud I guess.

Personally I put 4 outlet holes in my hempys, I just want them to drain evenly on all sides.

This is an outlet piece found in the 'irrigation fittings' of hydro-stores. It comes in 2 sizes, for 13mm or 19mm hoses.

...i love my coco and i'm working to dial that in, lol, i'll let you guys do the experimentin'.

peace, bozo
I love experimenting. Its defo half the fun with me. ... also, through experimentation ive found what works best for me in my particular situation. Not only the materials I use but the process of feeding, dealing with smells, drying and curing the bud etc has been a little experimental.

If you read my simple introduction to Hempy in the first post, I didnt even mention COCO. This was because I was completely ignorant about all the different substrates one could use in Hempy. I now believe that most of these substrates have different properties making them equally valid depending on your style of growing.

Was wondering about hempy moms. Think I could do a 50/50 mix of Per/Verm or would there be a high risk of root rot? Also because of the higher mix of verm, could move the drain hole to 1 1/2 or even 1". Rez should dry evenly with the rest of the medium as long as temps were in check. Look forward to your thoughts.

inerV, since you have a new size container, you may want to space your holes from the bottom of the bin such that a convenient water amount is needed to water (easy mixing/hauling). For instance with a 40L bin, dump in 10L (1gal) of water and mark that location, make your hole. Of course it will overflow when there is medium in the container as it takes up some space, but you want some overflow to freshen the res each feed. You may want to shoot for 0.75g water in each bin so it takes 1.5g per each pair of bins or 3g for each set of 4. It depends on how many bins you run. I've never seen a formula on how high the hole should be relative to height/volume of container, just the old 2" rule of thumb. Might as well use the hole height to your convenience if it can be had.

If you attach a hose to the tub as you suggest, you will have Hempy with a variable res.

by blocking/unblocking the hose you will be able to determine how much feed is still in the container. Particularly useful in larger tubs with a few thirsty plants.

lol, yeah, i know what you mean and for real, my entire history in this hobby is one of experimentation and DIY, i'm handy and poor so studying how the pro's did it and attempting to replicate it on the cheap has been my path, ...and i've learned much more than i'd ever have learned if i'd just had a pocket full of cake and could just go buy shit.

...but the last couple years i've been focused on upping the ante while simplifying my style and methods, back in the day i ran 55x 1liter 'pot's' in a high-density micro-SOG under a 400CMH mounted inside an air-cooled SuperSun II, ...now i run 11 plants in 6liter hempys around a barebulb 600 and although i'm not running a 'SOG' exactly, i AM running a perpetual as i am lucky to have a 4 x 4 DR120 to veg in and so i flip the next run the same day as i harvest the last run, which coincidentally happens to be tonight, lol. ...i planned on sharing pics but i can't find the charger to my camera, lol.

i keep my moms in cut down 3liter gingerale hempy-buckets with grorocks or hydroton in the rez for the weight they provide (stability) and coco up top.

...here's a few shots of my old moms before i switched to hempys and gingerale bottles which are green so light shining through doesn't promote algae growth.

yeah, i agree positioning the drainage can be important, ...i don't have any data to back up my reasoning but i aim for about 15% of the container as my rez and again, i don't know that i'm 'right', it just seems to work for me.

I probably wouldnt go more than 2:1 Perl verm. When I was running 3:1 Perl/Verm I found it dried out quick enough but I just can't see a 1:1 ratio being that good for aeration.

Also Verm can break up a bit. It can end up looking like soggy Weetabix. Not great.

lol, here's a picture of a Strawberry Cough mother of my grobro's, ...take note that it is in the same 9oz cup of coco it was in when i gave it to him as a rooted clone more than a year ago, ...coco has been berry berry good to me, lol.

I prefer soil for all my Moms. Its not much different than COCO. Its just I know how to work it. I know how to read all my Moms on it. I could keep a plant indefinitely grown in it by chopping down the rootball and transplanting.

Im sure you like coco in the same way.

I'll defo give COCO a whirl, probably mid 2013. atm. I'm enjoying using it as part of my Mapito.

Reason I was thinking hempy for my moms was the benefit of faster growth, but want to minimize having to water every other day, to watering twice a week or once every 5 days. Might just stick to promix for my moms, has always worked for me. I tried coco n it didn't work out for me very well. I use tap water and think I was having a cal/mag issue with the coco. If I was to try coco again for my moms, would it just b straight coco or would I benefit adding some perlite for some added aeration? I've always grown in soil/less, so pardon all the questions, just want some advice from those that know the pros n cons of other mediums.

Shaggn, you don't need to be pardoned on your questions bro, its whats this threads about.:?::lol:

.... ermm faster growth? Is that really how you need your Moms to perform? ... I tend to think Moms need to be steady. with the ability to slow them down if need be.

Are you dead against soil? I use a simple one part veg nutrient to maintain my Moms. It really couldn't be more simple.

Since this is W.O.H. I have to say many here happily run Hempy Moms in all substrates.

Not dead against soil. Think for the most part the excitement of trying something new after using the same medium for so long has taken over lol. I think your right on sticking to soil/less for moms. After thinking about what I wrote, your right about wanting to slow the moms growth down. I hate having to throw clippings out because I don't have the room and the moms were bigg eno that I didn't have a choice. Once I start running out of room, I just wish I had a bigger area to work with lol. Like u said, keep it simple, why complicate it more than it needs to be. Thanks man :)

Thats a sweet looking plant bozo.

I would be very proud if I had kept it in a solo for so long. Its looks wonderfully aged like a Japanese bonsai.

Bozo swears by the COCO and that solo Hempy tells a story in itself. but I don't have much experience with it so can't personally testify to it's performance.

With soil moms, I slow mine down by reducing nute strength, giving weaker light, allowing the pot to run dry and increasing dark period (I usually veg 24hr on). Generally just neglecting them a bit. .... I find it easy to 'revive' them by using foliar sprays and giving good feed.

i think i will go with the rule of thumb as this will be my first real hempy bucket lol, i want the biggest res possible but i dont want to go too high and hurt them! i wonder if its possible to make an adjustable hole on a slider type fixing..thanks for the input!

this is exactly what im going for, i want to have 4 hempys feeding into a large res, im gonna have to start building some frames for them to raise them above the res, im thinking i could use the run off fro m tote 1 to feed the next tote ect ect, is this a brain fart or what?

I'm still not 100% clear on what you mean. Are you talking 4 plants feeding from the same res? or 4 hempys?

In my mind im thinking of what Ive seen called a Hempy trough. .. Basically multiple plants in the same container.

Where you lose me is with the 'frames'. Can't picture it.

yes,4 x 40 liter troughs, 4 plants in each. i want to raise them up around 6" so i can get a decent res under for the run off, they will get vegged to a foot or so and all 16 will go under a 600w

edit.
may go with 6 per tray and veg less
