World Of Hempy

Hey everyone
I've been checking out this thread and thought I'd show you guys my current Hempy grow. These pics are a week or so before I flipped her. I got this plant from a buddy and she was lime green and yellow. She's in a 3 gallon bucket I got for $1. I use Dyna-Gro line, the same as Georgyboy, in 100% perlite. Let me know if you have any questions or comments.

She looks healthy,, Are you rockin the CFL's? Throw some reflective film on the walls maybe and ditch the carpet?

I also have a question,, I noticed most people running Hempy's pretty much build the buckets out of just about anything they can get their hands on, which I think is great, but does anyone worry about them not being FOOD GRADE? I know when I ran my Hydro Buckets, it was food grade or nothing, Is that not the case with Hempy's? Even though, I always make sure mine are Food Grade.

Thanks Rusty! It's under 2 150w hps. I had the cfls for veg and to take the pic.
The answer to question, for me at any rate, is no it shouldn't matter if it's food grade or not. I've seen everything from plastic cups to 15 gal garbage cans used. I would just make sure that light can't get to the roots but other then that anything could be used with the exception of a metal container.

Hey Relic,, Yea I wasn't really directing to the question to you in particular, but just as a question to anyone that might be participating in this thread.

I noticed you said NO to the question, but only because you see others not using food grade materials. The point to using food grade is so that you dont have chemicals leaching into your nute solution and being taken up by the plant. Light really would have nothing to do with it ( I dont think ).. Anyway, just a question I want to throw out there and see what people think.

Happy Growing!!

I see what your getting at now. I myself haven't had a problem with that, I use non food grade plastic for my hempy container and a regular 5 gal bucket for my nutes. I'm interested to see if anyone else has. I honestly never really thought about it like that.

I'm hoping my 2L water bottles are 'food grade'. They're sold for drinking water.

I think it may depend on your motive for growing Canna too. If you're a low level commercial producer it may not be a consideration at all. Money is the objective... But if growing to treat a medical condition, you may not want to have the purest product possible.

For me, my produce is sold cheap and quick. often without a cure. .... (Ive not found a way of having 30-40oz at a time sitting in Kilner Jars pay for itself.)
I do agree though, food-grade is ideal.

Ive gone to the hydroshop before and saw some really cheap soil pots that had an incredibly strong petrol smell to them. ... Naturally, I decided not to buy them.

On the subject of food grade, it's all a mater of cleaning it properly, I wouldn't use an empty container of agent orange, or petrol product, but if it's an inert product, its cleanable, and useable. I spray painted this one black and have used it several times.

I would say that most the containers we have lying around the house are safe to use for growing plants. Well, safe enough. Pretty much all plastic starts to breakdown and leach chemicals eventually. Like watt said just make sure you wash them out well and avoid containers that have held especially harsh chemicals. I am using bottles from work that held soap, bleach, degreaser, and oven cleaner and I feel pretty safe about it. I couldn't get the oven cleaner smell out of some of the oven cleaner bottles so I discarded them. And before any one says the safest growing container is a smart pot, let's remember that they are made mostly of recycled plastic, and they are made to breakdown. Sorry, but the safest container to grow your plants is the earth itself.

Yes, your 2 Liters would be Food Grade if they were meant to hold anything you would drink. I bought a bunch of 2 Liter Soda Bottles for 89 cents each. Since they are meant to store a food item such as soda, then they are food grade and safe.

I understand what Watts is saying about a good cleaning, but just not sure if that makes them safe to grow in.. If the container was meant to hold a fluid that you were not meant to ingest, than food grade materials is not something that would have to be required when packaging that item,, But I could just be a bit overly paranoid.. I just know when it comes to Hydro, Food Grade is the Only and Safest way to grow. Apparently the Recycled Plastic containers will leach some pretty funky stuff into your soup, and although, its probably not going to make you drop dead the second you take that first puff, I would imagine, its not the best thing to have rifling through your body. I am also not sure I would feel comfortable providing to patients if I did not know the product was clean.

Anyway,, This is all just Food For Thought,, I remember when I did my first soil grow, I knew nothing of food grade and nobody ever mentioned it,, Until I switched to Hydro, then the word FOOD GRADE came up, and I learned a little more. :-P

I also ordered some supplies to make my Home-made 'Ona' gel. (Its better than the real thing!) cheaper too.

10 various essential oils
3 packs of water absorbing crystals, makes 3 litres.
Polysorbate 20 , to emulsify the oil and water.

Well this frickin' Duc-Foot is just an unstoppable grower. It was 20" tall when I transplanted to 3 gal and flipped to 12/12. That was 5 days ago, it is now 32" tall (44" is my limit without modifying hood hanging). I'm sure it has it the rez cause it's going to need a 2nd H2O tonight and the other 3 will get their 1st.
It hasn't shown any flower heads yet so do you think I could top her again? I've never topped in 12/12 before. Or would super cropping be more appropriate? Another form of abuse I haven't tried yet.
I'm also thinking of going to a 10/14 lighting schedule to get her to start building bud now.

Any thoughts?

My other little prob is the outdoor girl. She seems to have exhausted the OC I built into the pot, and is starting to fade, which isn't good in wk 2 of flower. I have to give her 1 1/4 gals a day even if it rains. Since I don't have a bunch of flower nutes sitting around, I pulled out the box of MG Bloom Booster (15-30-15 + full line of micros), I know this shit is hot, but it makes itself available immediately. For the last 3 days I've used 1 tsp/gal (reads out at 850ppm) and the top end has darkened it's green a bit, but not slowing the fading enough for me, think I'm gonna double the dose tomorrow.
I thought about working in some special compost I built last summer into the top of the soil cap, but the roots are popping out the top like fur already.

Personally, I'm Ok with emergency topping if needed. As long as there are little or no flower showing. At least the plant can put the energy into producing elsewhere. ... Ideally it should be done early as poss so the branches elsewhere can get stronger.

Or tie'ing down?

re the outdoor: Considered an aerated tea. Its always a good tonic/ cure all.

I just went out under the green light with the scissors..... and I just couldn't do it. I think I'll add a little dark and pull her out and down, it'll help with all the little side branches that have already started.

Glad to hear your back in the saddle. Please post up a little more on your homemade Ona. My wife said is an essential oil guru, and said she could do something similar a few yrs back, but being the natural skeptic I am, I went and bought a 50lb carbon filter.

What is the scent of your Ona combined with dank?
Most store bought Ona & dank I've smelt reminded me of patchouli. Which I don't like...... Hey I found a way to get a shower every couple of days when on tour with the Dead in the 70's - SO WHY CAN'T YOU!!!
I sense your recipe has a better scent.

ahhh so your wife will know about the the oils, cool.

Many of the same Terpenes found in Cannabis are also found in there purest form in essential oils. The idea is to overpower the smell with something less 'dank' ... Take a look at some of these Terpenes to decide what smell you want.

Examples of some common Terpenes found in Cannabis:

-Borneol- menthol, camphor, pine, woody. Can be easily converted into menthol. Found in Cinnamon and Wormwood. It is considered a "calming sedative" in Chinese medicine. It is directed for fatigue, recovery from illness and stress.

-Caryophyllene - spicy, sweet, woody, clove, camphor, peppery. Found in black pepper(15-25%), clove(10-20%) and cotton(15-25%). It binds weakly to CB2 receptor. As a topical it is one of the constituents of clove oil, an anti-inflammatory and analgesic treatment for toothache. In high amounts, it’s a calcium and potassium ion channel blocker. As a result, it impedes the pressure exerted by heart muscles. Since THC does not have a smell, drug dogs are trained to find one, very smelly molecule called Caryophyllene-epoxide!

-Cineole/Eucalyptol- spicy, camphor, refreshing, minty. Found in rosemary, eucalyptus. It is used to increase circulation, pain relief and easily crosses the blood-brain-barrier to trigger fast olfactory reaction. Eucalyptus oil is considered centering, balancing and stimulating. It is possibly the stimulating and thought provoking part of the cannabis smoke stream.

-Delta3Carene- sweet, pine, cedar, woodsy, pungent. A constituent of rosemary, pine and cedar resin. In aroma therapy, cypress oil, high in D-3-carene, is used to dry excess fluids, tears, running noses, excess menstrual flow and perspiration. It may contribute to the dry eye and mouth experienced by some marijuana users.

-Limonene- citrus (orange, tangerine, lemon, and grapefruit), rosemary, juniper, peppermint. Repulsive to predators. Found in the rinds of many fruits and flowers. With the presence of other certain terpenes, Limonene can be an anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-depressant and anti- carcinogen. It can synergistically promote the absorption of other terpenes by quickly penetrating cell membranes. The result can be increased systolic blood pressure. Since Limonene is such a potent anti-fungal and anti-cancer agent, it is thought to protect against aspergillus fungi and carcinogens found in cannabis smoke streams!

-Linolool- floral (spring flowers), lily, citrus and candied spice. Possesses anti-anxiety and sedative properties (also in lavender).

-Myrcene – clove like, earthy, green-vegetative, citrus, fruity with tropical mango and minty nuances. The most prevalent terpene found in most varieties of marijuana, it is also present in high amounts in Mangos, hops, lemon grass, East Indian bay tree, verbena and Mercia. Myrcene is one of the most important chemicals used in the perfumery industry. Because of its pleasant odor, it is occasionally used directly. It’s a building block for menthol, citronella, and geraniol. It possesses antimicrobial, antiseptic, analgesic, antioxidant, anti-carcinogen, anti depressant, anti-inflammatory, and muscle relaxing effects. Myrcene affects the permeability of the cell membranes, allowing more THC to reach brain cells.

-Pinene- Alpha: pine needles, rosemary Beta: dill, parsley, rosemary, basil, yarrow, rose, hops, the familiar odor associated with pine trees and their resins. It is the major component in turpentine and is found in many other plant essential oils including rosemary, sage, and eucalyptus. Pinene can increase mental focus and energy, as well as act as an expectorant, bronchodilator (the smoke seems to expand in your lungs), and topical antiseptic. It easily crosses the blood-brain barrier where it inhibits activity of acetylcholinesterase, which destroys acetylcholine, an information transfer molecule, resulting in better memory. It may counteract THC's activity, which leads to low acetylcholine levels. Largely due to the presence of pinene, rosemary and sage are both considered "memory plants." Concoctions made from their leaves have been used for thousands of years in traditional medicine to retain and restore memory.

-Pulegone- mint, camphor, rosemary, candy. It is implicated in liver damage in very high dosages. It is found in tiny quantities in marijuana. Pulegone is an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. That is, it stops the action of the protein that destroys acetylcholine, which is used by the brain to store memories.

-Sabinene - Found in oak trees, tea tree oil, black pepper and is a major constituent of carrot seed oil.

-Terpineol- floral, lilac, citrus, apple/orange blossoms, lime. It is a minor constituent of many plant essential oils. It is used in perfumes and soaps for fragrance. It reduces physical motility 45% in lab rat tests… Couch-lock effect?

All 'Dank' smells are 100% masked with this 'Homemade' Ona.

The compounds given of by them are almost identical.

I like pine smells rather than floral scents. Citrus is also very effective. The exact quantities? I just play it by ear, or nose. .. a few drop here, a few drops there. Distilled water is best but not essential.

Shake it all together in a bottle before adding to crystals. Simple.

edit:
The mixture of polysorbate 20, distilled water and essential oils can be made into an amazing natural air spray by using a spray bottle. ... Go really heavy duty with a pump garden mister bottle.

EDIT:
This is POST CARBON FILTRATION ONLY.
