Growers are making tons of money dude. After selling about 1 pound of their product to the dispensaries they break even and still have a shit ton more to sell/smoke. I don't know where you're getting your profit model from. Also, dispensaries have to pay ridiculous fees and rents on their places. That's why a lot of them go out of business so quickly. Your "average price" is the high end/"top shelf" price of clubs in my area. Of course you're going to get higher prices in areas with less growers, it's harder to find buds. $45 an 8th is really too expensive for great bud even, but I don't mind doing it every once in a while to treat myself.
An experienced grower will get way more yeild out of his/her plants, but the quality will not be too much different. After my second time growing I was able to notice what was going on with my plants at almost every stage, and I was able to fix em up. I still only get around 0.8 grams per watt cause I'm not a beast, but I have good buds that I enjoy smoking. Weed is just such a fucking easy plant to grow. Sure there are ridiculous methods to make your bud glow in the dark and shit, but even without adding very many nutes, and changing the soil once or twice you could make great, tasty buds. In about a year or two after the prop passes, everyone will have good weed. Which is fucking awesome.
Back to the high priced collectives dilemma... I used to make the same mistakes as you man, only looking at top shelf. But you ought to just look at and smell all the bud before you buy it. If the waiter/waitress isn't a dick, ask them which one tastes the best etc. Places that put on price caps are usually your best bet ($50 for a 5 grams no matter what it is or what combination of buds you get). However, I don't know shit about clubs in San Diego. Over in Berkeley/Oakland though you can get an 8th of chronic for $25... it's pretty nice. And in SF you can find crazy deals, like taco Sundays, where after every 8th purchased you get two tacos (potentially being able to get 16 tacos)! If I were you I would just search around for more dispensaries, a new one pops up every week. If you get to know some of the employees or owners of clubs you will get discounts. Or, you have your card, just grow your own. Best decision I ever made. The bud might not be as good your first time, but hey, with time you'll become a beast!
