I've heard they leak everywhere when you water them , I only have had the chance to use fabric pots but wanted to try the air pots. If they aren't better I wont try them.

They're more expensive. water does shoot out the sides. You have to water very slowly. One benefit they do have. you can raise and lower the bottom mesh. So to aerate from underneath as well.

I would use fabric pots. root pouch from amazon or or rounders from growers house.

if 10 gals or larger no need for fabric pots unless its outdoor

Air pruning in cold room conditions(winter) is no bueno on the root system as well................pick your containers carefully; lol

garden looks awesome bro, congrats on your latest pull.

you should check out root makers pots if you like air pruning.

http://www.rootmaker.com/retail_products.php?Pageload=2#top

same thing as a smart pot but injection molded plastic and they
don't lose medium like those air pots. they come in 1g, 3g, and 5g.

here are a few pictures of the 3 gallon

I've been using their root-trapperII bags(no air pruning) for some time now......very well built and does what it's advertised to do.

Is the cost worth it???IDK, still think that regular nursery pots with a higher capacity will do just as well on annuals

when you're comparing the cost of a reusable plastic pot to a
throwaway fabric container like the root-trapperII, the long term
cost of replacing the fabric bags outweighs the short term lower
investment to me. while i like higher capacity containers, it means
i have to mix more medium as well. if i'm so concerned with
efficiency that i will spend extra $ on LED, why wouldn't i be
concerned with medium also? especially if you're using peat and
not recycling soil, IMO. i personally dislike our "throwaway" culture
and any item i can buy and reuse indefinitely i will personally opt
for over an item i can use for a couple seasons and then have to
throw out.

i guess you could just buy 2 and 5g buckets, drill holes in 'em and
line with weed blocker fabric, it would work exactly the same, but
might save you a few dollars. reusable shopping bags are made
out of the exact same material root pouch and other brands make
their bags out of. you can buy those shopping bags for $1 and they
hold about a cubic foot of soil. i've used the shopping bags for veggies
a couple years now, and they work exactly the same way as a smart
pot but for a lot less money. hell, the shopping bags even have handles!

Nice haul GK! PSUAGRO, you have me nervous now. I have 2 7 gallon smarties sitting on a storage container filled with perlite and the bottoms of my pots are very damp and cold, not soaked but very damp. Temps in the tent have been around 74 to 81. I'm thinking it's too cold to mold but I still check consistently.

I've used them for a couple of runs now without any signs of degradation.....like I said their well built. I was talking about the initial cost and if root bounding should even be considered an issue with flowering annuals in an appropriate sized plastic pot.....

Btw I run with the ROLS "system " exclusively now.........:-)

No worries, mj is a hardy c3 plant...... your fine with those room temps, I'm talking about way cooler conditions.

Ok cool. There's also a heating vent behind the tent that's near the floor, so I don't think it will ever go below the 60's as long as I never run out of oil :bigjoint:

Thank ya guys! Can't wait to see how this goes with the first round of plants that go through the rotation. I might even play with light arrangement configurations. Because this will be a more perpetual type thing so I might see if it works best to start under one light and finish under another. So far things are looking good. Check out the unknown pixie dust's stalk, it's the purple plant at the top and the stalk pic at the bottom. Smell's like skittles. That's in a 2 gal felt pot my son's mom made... LOL

I would start under the xgs for 2-3 weeks, then the rw, then the cobs. Xgs should minimize stretch, get a nice bud set from the extra red in the rw, and finish under the intensity of the cobs.
