Generally a US Navy ship will have a set speed but during qualifications an actual top speed is easily viewable to the crew of the ship.My carrier was said to travel 40 knots but while we were racing the USS Enterprise CVN65 we were at speeds in excess of 60 MPH.I was onboard the USS Carl Vinson CVN 70.WE beat Enterprise and we had one bent screw.:peace:

knots and MPH are very close, at least that is what I was taught in sailing class...so I would not swear to it.

Fastest ship in the Navy is the Nuclear Aircraft Carrier, I personally have seen one go over 50 knots. Did 2800 KM in under 28 hours. Thats in excess of 60 MPH folks. The USS Abraham Lincoln went from Dubai, United Arab Emirates to Mogadishu Somalia leaving at 10 am on Oct 3, 1993 and arriving at 1:30 pm OCT 4, 1993. Those things are FAST!! They seriously understate what they can do. the acceleration is actually pretty fast compared to non nuke powered ships, sure can kick a destroyers ass any day.

10 Knots =11.5 MPH

That makes sense, why they said knots was about the same since 8 knots was pretty fast sailing...

Nice info there sailor dude!

I think the estimates given take into considerations rougher than average seas and weather, so under calm seas an object that big can really get moving.

Were not taking into account the hours it took to turn the ship completely turned around and the time slowing down to come to a stop. It was being pushed into the pier by tugs when the call came in, we were about to have shore leave after 5 weeks at sea, we had 5 more weeks of duty before most of the crew got any. Fortunately I wasn't a Sailor and got off in Mogadishu to help the Army Special Forces get out of the Situation they were in. There is a TV channel aboard ship called CIMS and it always displays the ships heading, exact coordinates, speed, wind speed and direction etc etc etc. I said it went over 50, they turned the channel off at 52 knots. The windspeed at that time was 25 knots. Absolutely No One and nothing was allowed on the flat top due to Winds in excess of 85 knots while cruising. The ship performs most flight operations between 30 and 35 knots to provide a good amount of built in airspeed for jets taking off. It has 2 nuclear reactors and refuels once every 20 years. It never runs more than 1 reactor. Has 4 screws ( Propellers) each 21 feet across weighing like 65,000 lbs each. Its got like the mass of the empire state building. Displaces something like 95,000 tons. And it could, just might possibly move faster than interstate speeds.hmmmmm something to think about. the rest of the ships accompaniment arrived the next 2 days.
