2014 Secret cup RST's are in, once again the shatters fail

Out of 34 entries into the secret cup, 29 shatters failed the residual solvent test, 1 shatter passed, 4-4 waxes passed.

This seems to happen every time they do testing on high end shatters. They simply can't hold up to testing standards. I think it's time for the community to accept the truth, waxes are generally much cleaner than shatters.

I wonder if the one that passed was made with the industrial butane?

I am happy with my RSO, QWISO, and of course, my e-cannabis oil too. I prefer to just use alcohol as a solvent.

I think it should only be common sense if you have to continue under vac and or heat to make wax, that it has less residual poop....
personally I could care less if their are some leftovers as long as it looks purged im good..easy enough to judge by look

Why is it a "high end shatter" if it fails the residual solvent test? Rather than say shatter sucks and wax is great, let's find out what the 29 entries did WRONG and the 1 entry did RIGHT and go from there.

Having judged concentrates, including at one cup, my impression is that shatter is much more likely to end up with residual butane, than wax is, because of the much longer time under vacuum processing into the wax.

The thing that was made clear to me, is that all of the entries paid a $1000 to enter, thinking they had the winning extract, and all but one was wrong.

All felt theirs would pass the lab tests for residual solvent before plunking down that $1K, and a number were wrong there as well.

I personally think there should be different standards for the different solvents, because they aren't all created equally toxic, and in the case of butane, relatively non toxic in the amounts typically found.

The way many brothers and sisters leave butane in their shatter, is by processing at too low a temperature for it to readily escape, but for longer periods. That is why we use 115F for a shorter period, that still retains adequate monoterpenes.

It would be interesting to know what solvents were used. Were they winterized? I find soft waxes annoying to work with for e-vaping. They melt inconsistently, having less mass. If I buy a wax for a taste treat, I dissolve it in ethanol, maybe 1/2 oz/gram, and let it dry on glass at 90°F, makes nice, tasty shatter.

Texas I believe this was socal secret cup. Well I plan on being one of those few shatters that passes when it comes to norcal in a couple months

I feel people rush either their shatter or wax and that's what leaves residual more often than not. We are working with a lot of variables and a lot of them we just can't control. Some strains just don't want to shatter either *coughbubbacough*

Dan do you know if any candy wax or shatter comb as I like to call it has been submitted to any of the secret cups? And if so if it passed? What's a fail? Over just a couple ppm?

there's no official website list I can find, i got the numbers from one of the competitors on facebook. The only problem is the test results are by contestant number and there's no association to a concentrate company name, the secret cup is happening live right now so everyone there knows who's belongs to who but I can't link entry photos to the numbers yet.
Also the hysteria is about the new trace residual analysis pulling up pentane for everyone, it's not butane everyone was getting high numbers on it was the residual Pentane which FD has stated lines up boiling point wise with being just above the "pro choice" 95f and below vac oven terptastic tempuratures.

All BHO has this in it, and it's turning out be safe for rats at +6k ppm. This is the first time it's been exposed; hell in canada the one lab we have doesn't have the tek to even report terps, if we could just test for butane my city would probably implode from real poison numbers. Pentane in shatter is here to stay, dab it up like you did last week it beats the shit out of breathing the air in traffic for 1 min.

They technically fail because it calls for less than 500ppm of any tra, the new pentane stats are whats making the general admission numbers soar.
Without the pentane TRA the numbers where like everyone elses at every other cup and would pass at every other lab without that particular residual to analyses.

inhalation exposure to an airborne concentration of 5,000 ppm for 10 minutes appears to have no ill effect in humans, while 90,000 to 120,000
ppm can affect behavior/central nervous system and cause symptoms of central nervous system depression and narcosis

I sort of agree with you. If it's just butane, I don't really care as long as it doesn't spark. But what I'm hearing is that many of these didn't pass because of pentane contamination. That's nasty IMO.

Also, wax simply allows for solvent to escape more freely. I think that has a lot to do with it.

High end shatter generally spends less time under heat, retaining both terpenes and solvent.
