I think the fact the two had just committed a robbery would have factored into the way they responded to the officer.

That's an important point. We don't know all of the facts in this, but I think it's fair to say that this played in to how things unfolded. They probably assumed that they were being apprehended for the robbery, and were more confrontational due to that.
