My last grow had 6 out of 7 make it to the 2 gallon pots, of the 6, five where fems.
I had to cut them to three for the final grow in the cabinet. The male had a much thinner growth pattern than the females.
I kept the only WW, and two of the CC/BBGA, The two fems that I ended up composting were very nicely shaped plants but a smaller pheno.
I have not grown without manipulating the plants so I don't know how they would end up untrained.

I don't really do what he's doing as far as medium, but that's a personal thing. The bucket is the common factor here...drain hole up from the bottom to allow a reservoir of sorts. They've been called Dutch buckets too, I think, @Dr.Pecker

That gave me a great idea on how to transfer my 12/12 coco cup planted seeds to hemp. I think I'll give it a try this weekend. He must not use canna coco because with canna coco there's no need to flush the coco. Also I can't see myself starting that tiny plant in the big ass 5 gallon bucket off rip. I would start of in a solo cup then transfer her to the 5 gallon bucket. That just my 2 cents......while drinking my tea. ...lol

People do it quite a bit with auto strains that they start from seed at 12/12, but I go from Solos to 1 gallon cloth pots first. I might try an auto soon - just to see what all of the fuss is about.

I did this before with lava rock in the bottom. I put a screen in between the organic soil and rocks but I used regular planting pots.

Regular planting pots have holes in the bottom or at the base of the pot. There is no hole in the bottom of a Hempy bucket only on the side therefore creating the rez at the base.

If you read the first few pages you will get an idea of how a Hempy works, but if you read this whole thread you will see how others have customized this to fit their needs.
I have gone from Perlite/Vermiculite, to straight Perlite, to a 50/50 Perlite/Coco and am now using 65/35 Perlite/Coco. I have also added a flush hole at the base of the bucket, did with when I was getting nute buildup in floor of the rez. Now when necessary it is easy to flush the system.

I am now using a modified Lucas formula for my nutes so have very little need for the flush hole.

Gr based on your experience what works for you best, p/v, straight perlite, 50/50 perlite coco or 65/35 perlite coco?

All 5 beans popped over the past couple of days and are stretching to the light. I have them under a two foot 4 bulb T5 with CFLs on both ends. Will keep them there for another week or so, need to add the two inches of coir to the top of the buckets when the plants stretch enough. I will also put rooting compound on the trunk of the plants before I bury them in the coir. This has worked great in the past for me. They will go under the LED for veg after the coir is added. I will be flowering under a 400W HPS, May try a 400W MH for veg, any thoughts on this folks?

This is the root ball of the Afghan from my last grow. Great root mass.

Sounds like you got it covered dude. Glad those beans came through for you :)

Sky,
The picture above is of the the root ball of the Afghan, MoFo had balls, but the root mass was the best I have had. That is a 65/35 Perlite/Coco Coir.
My new grow are all 65/35's, all my beans popped.

What ration have you been using?

My thoughts on the different mediums.
Perlite/Vermiculite, this was a 90/10 ratio. Most of the Vermiculite migrated to the area just above the straight Perlite and created a layer. In one bucket it took 20 minutes just to drain through the layer and get any liquid out the drain hole. I did not like this medium.

Straight Perlite, I did like this no nute build up at all, was able to use the Lucas formula and had a very good grow. Only down side is having to water/nute daily. Would be good with an auto watering D2W.

50/50 Perlite/Coco Coir, this held water/nutes well, I believe a little too well. I made an error in this grow as I started using the same nutes and rations as I used for the straight Perlite. I created a major problem with the pH and ppm,. I used the same dry nutes that I used for the Perlite and they built up in the coir and the base of the bucket. I only flushed once during the veg cycle. I change the nutes during flowering but I know I hurt my yields.

65/35 Perlite/Coco Coir, I started using this on my last grow the Afghan that turned out to be a boy. I really like this formula, do not have to water daily if I don't want too, it drys well between waterings. It accepts the nutes and modified Lucas/Head formula well. Light to work with. And the growth rate is just great. I use GH Micro grow and bloom at 6 ml and 9 ml respectively. Also add 3 ml of Cal/Mag.
After the plant reach the 5 or 6 node I will begin watering every other day to the drainage point but will water the Perlite/Coir in between but not to drainage. I have found that the roots in the medium use the moisture in the medium faster than the roots in the rez. Another reason to cap the medium with straight coir, it helps hold some moisture in the Perlite/coir mix I like a massive amount of roots in the medium.

As always advice and comments welcome.

Hey GR, Keep on playing with the medium, sounds like you've gone from good to better to even a better yet, and I'm sure you haven't found best yet.

Anyways I was looking at your photo, and it looks like the rez perlite was still in the rez, and I'm guessing that root density decreased right near the rez water level????? I've always noticed that the root density changed at the rez with coco over perlite. Not saying this is a bad combo, my current grow is coco over a perlite rez. I'm just wondering if this is what you saw in your bucket breakdown.

Getting ready for the next run. Gonna Sog a 4 x 10 tray 2 k watts in rim to rim 2 gal pots . Sky walker , San Fernando and OG . The other 2 K side will be an Indica side of various flavors I have around in 3 gal pots . straight perlite . Think Im gonna run Flora Duo this time. Even though the OG's are a pain in the ass to run I like the strains and still sparks interest to grow them.

Hey been just lurking on here a bit lately and lo and behold....MOE!!!
Awesome to see you back and that you're not letting the man hold you down. Keep it green! But most of all keep
it safe.

Nice results with the peri/coco blend Gr8. How often did you have to water? You say you had to water daily with
straight perlite? I still have a hard time wrapping my head around this as I have never had to water more than every
other day and most rounds I can go 3-5 days between watering and usually go at least 3.

I have been using perlite with a coco cap, much like the soil cap tech described by Watts so many pages back.
I love this and have really noticed root mass all the way to the top of my medium now.

Still got my little 250w grow going, been experimenting with selfing and have some SSH, Amnesia and Chiesel going
in the scrog with a few preggo buds.

If I can locate my cam I'll get some pics up tomorrow in Moe's honor.

I'm not gonna lie.... This is the most painfully slow start to a grow ever....!
I've got the temps up now, and humidity is OK, but man... Barely noticeable growth compared to previous runs.

Whine over.

You must be running low...lol. Or I am empathizing, because I AM. Holidays are a bitch! That, and I made a bad decision to try full on hydro. It's not for me. I am so glad to have returned to my Hempy buckets, it's like a warm security blanket. MUSH, plants! MUSH! I really can't complain too much. I have ONE that's pushing me along - gotta weave another screen much faster than I expected. I'll take it. It's a good problem to have! Hope they hit high gear, Growan!

I'm probably just being impatient because I have a deadline to complete the run. I know it's not a good idea to start a grow with no room for manoeuvre, but that's the way it's worked out this time.
Also being new to this method adds to whole unease about how it's progressing.
