This discussion has been floated around on this thread a few times, but IME I have noticed the best growth
when I allow the buckets to dry out considerably between waterings.
Presumably this would be true once the roots had reached down to the res, I'm only just getting the second set of leaves appearing on the better developed plants.
A couple are just sat there with their cotyledons and no true leaves. I'm just hoping they're really striving for root development in favor of leaf, but it seems a little like wishful thinking...

Roots before shoots! If they are that small, it could be a couple to three weeks depending upon the size of your container (forgive me if you have said - i will go back and read). Some stall longer than others, which is of little comfort, I'm sure. Hope your Hempy venture goes better than my hydro did! They might arrive to the race late, but I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at the race they run! Don't stress too much. I hate making the girls "punch a clock" as well. Deadlines SUCK! bongsmilie

2 litre bottles, which I appreciate is not ideal for a sprout in a Grodan plug. I would have preferred to 'pot up' a few times, but was advised that since getting finished and growing from seed were considerations, I may actually be better off going straight to final pots.
We'll see. I'm feeling abut better about things today anyhow. Positive mental attitude. Gotta be a good thing.

My wife has been complaining because I'm making her smoke seeded bud. But I want the seeds and the smoke is great. Anyways I dryed down a some bud and and broke up around a 1/4oz for her trying to earn some holiday points. This is the frostiest sticky bud I've ever grown. Here's a shot of the cleaning tray, I think this will be a good hash making strain. Oh yea it's Maui Bay

Holy cow, I've just finished reading through this whole thread and WOW. Birth, death, comedy, tragedy, and the triumphant retun of our hero. An epic tale in a thread about a fancy flowerpot.

I have a few questions now that I have made it here:

1. I'm getting ready for my first hempy grow. Would the experts still recommend coco over a perlite res, or is a mix of coco and perlite for that top layer the preferred medium at this point? Is the jury still out?

2. It seems that nobody is recommending 20-30% runoff anymore, but it still seems that some runoff is advisable. Has there been a consensus on this? I am thinking maybe 10% is a good amount to shoot for?

3. Has anyone tried using pH'd water as the beginning of their watering? In other words, if, say, you're going for 25% runoff (to keep the math easy) and the res holds a quart, pouring 8 ounces of water first and then your quart of nutrient solution. That way you'd get a small flush every time you watered, plenty of runoff to pull oxygen through the medium, but you wouldn't be wasting nutrients since the water part of the pour would be your runoff.

Thank you all so much for all the posts. As a beginner, every one of these 416 pages has been invaluable.

Hey HollyD,

wow .. you started this thread from the beginning, that's dope. I'm about to turn in for the night but thought I would give you my thoughts on your questions.

1. The Jury is still out I think and I haven't used coco+perlite for a while but my thoughts would be for a mix of the two. Around 60/40 ratio throughout the hempy. Hopefully someone with more experience with this substrate will add their opinion on having just perlite in the res.

2. Although others may run-off some when feeding, I personally have never done so and have always had healthy plants to show for it. I'm not saying you shouldn't, it's just not what I do. I run relatively small buckets (2L) it's possible, I guess, that salt build-up has not been an issue for this reason.

3.I just don't know :(

Grow medium is a matter of personal preference in my opinion. Hempys are so versatile I've even seen some outstanding
looking plants using polyfill from couch cushions as the medium. ( Shout out to Dalek!)

That being said, perlite would be my recommendation to start off with. It's very forgiving, ph inert and does not foster insect
growth. I have tried coco/perlite 30/60 mix and full coco and have noticed similar to identical results. I prefer the perlite as IMO
it allows the best water to air ratio in the root zone.

As I said earlier I have switched to the 100% perlite with a 3 inch cap of coco with great results. Try it out, get comfortable
with the technique and whatever medium you choose, and tweak it from there.

Anyone ran liquid orgains or teas in hempy
I have. back in the day I tried all organic hempy's with teas etc. .tbh ..I found it messy and attracted small flies to the grow-room. Plants sure loved it, but because I was running so many small plants that each required feeding I settled on regular inorganic nutes with micro's (GH Flora series).

If you're doing few decent size plants (2 Gallon+) then it might be worth it if organic is your thing. It won't be a problem for the Hempy method per se. .

Awesome, thanks, you guys. I've got the buckets full of coco now but there's nothing growing in them, so it's easy to change that mix. Glad I got to the end of the thread before it was too late! ;-)

As promised earlier, some pics from my current grow. I have 3 plants in individual scrog buckets
under 250w HPS. I sprayed some clones with colloidal silver to reverse them and pollinated a few buds on
each. I also ran a mini-mainline along with some clones of the 3 main plants to run some feminized crosses
to play around with.

Shitty pics, one of the kids must have my good camera somewhere.

Had some issues in veg with this girl and she never really recovered till it was time to flip. So much of her middle
didnt amount to anything so I just removed her screen and LST'ed.

Mini-Mainline Royal Queen Critical. Mainlined for 8 and done as an experiment to see how well I could regulate
plant height as my box is only about 30" high. She and the other clones are thrown in the corner under a Kessil 150 LED

Wow sorry for the length of that post, I am still trying to work out the new image posting since the changeover like 6 months ago. :dunce:

Many peeps have had success running straight coco, there shouldn't be a problem with aeration. it's like 'stoneslacker' said earlier, Hempy's are so versatile, the substrate pretty much comes down to preference. One of the benefits of added perlite is that it allows the feed to pour through the Hempy bucket quicker/easier.

Love how you've got that canopy so even, that's efficiency right there.

Here are a couple of shots of the Mr. Nice Black Widow I am growing now.

12\23 Started the beans in pH'ed water for 20 hours, then planted directly into the 65/35 Perlite/Coco Coir.

12/26 First bean up
20141227_173232.jpg

12/27 All 5 beans up and rocking, can't make out the new plants in the picture too small yet.

12/31 todays pics, I will be putting in a two +inch layer of Coir over the top of the mix today, to help hold mixture in place plus provide a cap to hold more moisture in the upper strata of the buckets better.

Nice packaging and the seeds looked healthy

Up, Up and away!

Edit here!

Just put the Coco Coir cap on the buckets, now lets grow!

They look real good buddy. I think there's defo some benefits in having them in the final bucket from start. .. For one, they'll be sending their main taproot straight down looking for that res, should actually make them settle in much quicker.

Look forward to seeing them grow-up.
