He would pettle his art on the street corners for money. He also sold news papers. But he was rejected by all the art schools and his dreams were shattered and he became disillusioned. Over time he became angry and hateful at society which turned him into the person he became. He wasn't evil at first. The shattering of a persons dreams can change a person.
