Coffee

I bought one a couple months ago, it works well. It was cheap, you can find them occasionally on Amazon for under $20. It has a permanent filter so no need to buy paper. I prefer to not use paper if I can get away with it so the oils are not trapped in the filter.

I wanted a pour over that would make enough coffee for two people and was dishwasher safe. I do use a Hario Buono goose-neck kettle for pouring the water. While it is very thin glass at that price I won't be upset when it breaks.

I can't compare it to a Chemex, I've never used or tasted coffee from one of those.
oh man, that goose neck buono kettle is barista-level pimp. hopefully i'll have one by 2020.

yea, i really like the bodum globe carafe pour-over! you can't beat it for the price and ilove that melon shape. chemex just has the branding and was the first, of its kind, to the market ages ago. i won't miss trying to chase down those fangled chemex filters. the chemex does pour a bit better and is thicker glass, but that still doesn't keep the coffee any warmer. until someone starts doing double walled borosilicate, retaining heat will be a problem. i like rrog's idea of insulating the carafe with a towel.

one observation about using the steel mesh filter w the bodum, the grind must be on the fine side or the coffee will be under-extracted by pouring through too fast. part of the chemex slow extraction is the use of a filter, so adding a natural paper filter to the bodum steel filter would slow it even further. i'm still getting a feel for what retaining more of the essential oils adds to the cup, so I'll avoid paper filters for the time-being.

I'm pretty happy with my $10 thrift store find, a Cuisinart drip coffee maker with built in grinder.

This morning, I'm making myself a treat; adding hot cocoa mix and a shot of orange liqueur.

That's from early "studies"

The paper filters aren't going to disproportionately "absorb" a wide range of comounds encompassing esters terpenes alcohols etc
Regarding gas chromatography
".... that were classified as soft by the tasters had a cafestol-kahweol ratio of greater than 1:2, whereas those that were hard or Rio quality had a ratio of less than 0.96. There were no intermediate values resulting from these experiments.

This is the first published data linking coffee quality to the content of terpenes in the bean and it provides a possible alternative to tasters"

However published in 2012
Cafestol extraction yield from different coffee brew mechanisms

Showed differences only resulting from the method ie boiled, French press etc.

Just visited a St Vincent on Jan 1, for the first time again in years.. forgot about the joys of bargain hunting in those places.. wouldn't mind finding a cuisinart mixer second hand.

Orange flave compliments chocolate and coffee well, sounds like winner!

You can always adjust the grind on the hario too. Just takes a while to dial it in by hand.
I guess it's a glorified pepper grinder of sorts, works damn well. Didn't take too long to figure out I can adjust the tri-nut to spin it outward (for a coarser grind) easier than spinning it inward (for a finer grind), if beans are already in the hopper.

To adjust to a finer grind, you must empty all beans out of the Hario first.

My coffee maker finally died yesterday, an older Krupps grind and brew. I have already repaired it a couple times, the heating element hasn't worked for 2 years, I use it for the grinder, then I pour hot water over. The grinder stopped working, I think it's finally done.. Had to dig out the bean grinder and French press, not something I want to do everyday, mainly cause it's only good for 2 cups. I'm lazy and want to make coffee 1 or twice a week.

Need some recommendations, prefer grind+brew, 10 cup minimum, 12 preferred.

Does that take coffee grounds? I can boil water on the stove of that's all it does.
Its just a water boiler Lol, it boils faster than the stove and turns itself off when its boiled. For 20$ at a Starbucks you can get a French press. I was just recommending the electric boiler so you can get your fix in 3 minutes of versus 7minutes. So much time saved, so many activities now available with the extra 4 minutes to spare

I was looking online for this model, either a good one or one for parts, no luck. I just put it on the operating table and about to open her up once I finish this bong. I can't make it work any less than it does already, right? bongsmilie
