Committing violence against someone you disagree with shows that you don't have an intellectual argument strong enough, that you're confident enough in to defeat your opponent. If you can't beat them with logic, you have to beat them with force.

This is exactly why peaceful revolts and revolutions have succeeded throughout history, it's why African Americans gained equal civil rights on paper, and why we look back at events like WW2 and can collectively objectively assess that the subjugation and treatment of the Jewish people and cultural/political/sexual minorities was wrong.

The 1st amendment allows us to extend any thought without the fear of prosecution. This is a fundamental right. This right has been earned through centuries of blood, sweat, and tears from millions of people giving the ultimate sacrifice.

The freedom of speech is there to protect the speech that is the most offensive. You can disagree with anything anyone says, that's your right, but you can't legally restrict them from saying it, because that's their right

Oppressors know violent crack down on peaceful protests remove the image of their legitimacy. Also, violent crackdown on peaceful protesters lends legitimacy to anything a violent opposition group may do.

Hitler could laugh at peaceful protesters and mow them down with impunity because he had wiped out any chance of violent response.
