Are cobs really worth it?

In case anyone made it this far, yes LED lighting is well worth it, because;
1. Better efficiency/less heat
2. Better spectrum
3. Better quality results

A well built LED fixture could last decades, because there's no need to change out parts like lamps. Between this and their efficiency, the lights pay for themselves over time vs HID- usually within the first year of use..

Many good manufacturers here on RIU vend top quality fixtures and many more sell kits to make same. Some names;
Horticulture Lighting Group
Cobkits
Johnson Grow Lights
Timber
Northern Grow Lights
Tasty LED

and more (sorry if I missed you!).

The era of HID lighting (that's HPS, DE, CMH, CDM, etc) is drawing to a close. High quality COB and Quantum Board lighting is now less expensive than ever and produces better than first and second generation 'blurple' lighting.

Thanks for making it this far, hope @sunni or another mod would be willing to clean up the mess in this thread to restore is usefulness to the community.

Cheers!
I've been waiting a decade for LED to make a show, you have a message.

Reading your bitching and bickering made for a short ferry ride.
You should have went to Politics section, you would not even have known you were on the ferry, Unclebuck is slowly cooking in the oblivion and is having a meltdown to apocalyptic proportions bashing almost everyone, if he was not the owner he would have been banned long ago.

There are pros and cons to each - without a definitive answer (cost, heat, efficiency, form factor etc). You generally get what you pay for and some leds are easy enough to DIY, so the cost/performance works out pretty well. I think the big contestors be between quantum boards and CMH. I'm using cobs atm and have ordered some led panels to replace them as they suit my needs better.
Ok, I've seen "CMH" mentioned, what are they? Compact Metal Halide?

I agree that there are pros and cons to each, and I plan to do as much research on each as I can as this can be a pricey investment :)

Ceramic Metal Halide, an upgraded version of the old and universally obsolete metal halide.

My city is fast replacing HPS streetlights with LED. They're well worth the investment.

EDIT: Chunky beat me to it.

CMH is a strong contender for the best Cannabis grow light in the world at the moment. If you want simple, plug in and grow then CMH is the one. They produce some spectacular Cannabis too compared to HPS grown.
