Seriously Considering

Northern California is so much better as it is less expensive, less crowded, nice weather, great growing season, and wide open spaces. You might check out Sacramento as it's a good sized city that is centrally located..easy drive to Reno-Tahoe-San Francisco ~*Ü*~ Best of luck to ya my friend!

a good town to live in thats close to LA but reminds me of like texas or something is Corona, there is seriously a street there where the lines are red white and blue, bncha dairy farms and cowboys there
You've gotta be kidding. You're gonna send him to fucking Corona? How about Norco? Dude, that's just messed UP. Even Pomona or Chino would be better than that.

Dro, if you try to go to a place that's not citified, like where VTX and I live in the Sierra Nevada, then you'd better make SURE you've got a good job lined up before you get here. Competition is FIERCE, even in the Bay area, L.A., San Diego areas, where there are lots of jobs, there are also lots and lots of people competing for those jobs. Have you checked any online papers to see what jobs are available in different areas? Rent? And so on?

Don't go to Corona, Riverside, Norco, Ontario, the whole of the Inland Empire is about as big an armpit as Bakersfield, Fresno, and Modesto are (but the Inland Empire no longer stinks of cow shit, whereas almost the entirety of the 99 corridor does).
ummm like 45 minutes from downtown
On what planet? Or maybe if he's driving at 3am and there's no freeway construction. (I hope I'm not offending you, I'm just busting your chops, I lived down there for over 30 years and only moved in '04.)
it can be any major city
Fresno
San Deigo
LA
I dont care.
Seriously, get online and start looking at want ads. Plan on making a two week trip out to search for work AND get an idea of neighborhoods. You have to know that California has some pretty tough neighborhoods, yeah? For instance, Santa Ana, in Orange County. There are some really nice areas, and then there are the areas with the Asian gangs living side-by-side with Mexican and other Latino gangs. I knew my guys in (Guada)La Habra, but that didn't necessarily make it "better".
any one ever heard of Victoriasville? if so got any comments on it?
Victorville. Another armpit. Seriously. With gang problems burgeoning. Same with the whole of San Berdoo, practically (San Bernardino, which is a mountain range as well as a city by the mountain range).
but jobs in cali also pay more
and i wont be living there alone
Not that much more, unless you have a good, marketable skill.

That's getting closer to the mark. But I wouldn't say that it's so much less expensive than SoCal. Maybe in Sact'o, but not Bay area.

Dro, I was forced to do something similar many, many years ago when my second marriage was failing and I couldn't get my husband to find work. I ended up in San Diego because I had a sister-in-law there (who turned out to be a tweaker who liked to shoot her shit, and almost killed herself). I started getting the San Diego Union-Tribune sent to my house so I could scour the want ads, and I did find a job and ended up moving down there. Lived there for four or five years, and it is a pretty nice place to live. However, the people there are not as friendly as the people here where we are. That's another thing I love about this area. Yeah, it's California's bible belt, but they'll talk to you! If you smile and say hello they won't look away quickly, they'll smile and say hello back and maybe you'll even end up in a nice conversation with them. I really like that, plus the people here tend to be very helpful as a whole. There is no such thing as being stranded here, because SOMEONE will go out of their way to make sure you're alright.

Wow seamaiden thanks for all that
I will definitely be doing all of that before I move
and will definitely have a job as well
so where do you suggest then you gave me all that then never suggested a town.

That's my degree.
good job availability?

If you're gonna live in SoCal, you might want to look at some of the cheaper areas in OC, like anaheim or P-town. (placentia or something like that)

the other thing to remember is that most cities have a cheap area and a nice area. I live(d) near la habra. There's the nice upper-class white area of la habra, then there's guada la habra.

Or another nearby city is Whittier, which has Whittier and Shittier.

It's all in where you look, there's lots of affordable housing, especially if you look in student neighborhoods

there's ALWAYS traffic going into LA, unless it's a weekend. but you do NOT want to work in the city.

if you're looking to go to school, how much tuition are you able to cover? since now we know you'll be looking for not only a good place to live but a good school.

well, if you're not too concerned about going to LA a lot (I live equally far from LA and the IE) I'd recommend living out in east 626, western 909, northern 714 kind of area, check out Mt. San Antonio College, they have pretty solid programs.

that's def. one of the best CCs in SoCal

You're KIDDING! I went to (Guada)La Habra High, and so did my boys! I went for two years, after Lowell High in unincorporated Whittier was closed down.

Yep, yep, Bookworm is giving you the lowdown. Jesus.. do you know Rancho Starbuck (used to be Starbuck for me, and that was where Whittier Christian is now).

Then the congestion on the 91 must be vastly better than what I've dealt with. And the 60? Jesus. :| Mapquest and Google maps estimated it would take me over an hour and a half to get to North Highlands from home (about a 60mi. trip). It was an hour.
Who drives 65 down there? If you do you'll get run over (by guys like you)!

Ok, so, Dro, other areas in the OC are Garden Grove, Cypress, Westminster, Buena Park (home of Knott's Berry Farm)... you need a map. It all runs together like one ginormous city, not like home where you have a town, then nature or farms, and then another town, and then nature and woods or farms, and then another town. Uh uh, L.A. is not like that at all, and it's SPREADING. North and east.

south of LA is OC. anything close to the coast is gonna be expensive as all fuck, especially in OC. if you hit SoCal you'll want to be inland more, in freeway terms anywhere close to the 57 should suit you just fine.
