Some people scrape the skin, some don't. Some use some kind of powder or liquid, some don't.
I tried several methodes in the same system. Didn't notice any differences.
But I can imagine that some strains have a skin that is thicker and that in that case the hormones in the liquid or powder might work.
Or some scraping.
What I did notice during my tests is that if the water was slightly warmer, roots appeared faster.
But don't overdo it.
There are so many methodes to clone. No need to buy an expensive device. Perhaps if you want to grow 100 or 200 at the time, a plug & play cloner makes sense. But otherwise... no need for it. Most people use it perhaps 5 times a year. If it slightly leaks... so what? Some duc tape and it runs.
I experimented with a lot of methods.
With foggers. Works great, but those things are expensive and you need a few of them otherwise you have the risk that the mist stays on one side. Also they have a tendency to break down easily. Also you can not add any nutrients (if you would want to do that). The fogger membranes can not turn the nutrients into mist. They are very silent. I ran them on a timer with 3 minutes on, 10 minutes off.
With eb & flow. Works well but it takes some time to find out how high the exit pipe has to be. But simple form a material point of view. No clogging. Easy to clean. You need 2 totes or buckets. So some chance of leaking at you need to find a way to put them on top of each other and that you can still reach both totes.
Sprayers. Easy system as Airwalker shows. Many examples on internet. Easy to get all the equipment. Can clog sometimes.
Sprinklers. My favourite. It is like the sprayers, but slightly easier to build (you only have to cut the pipes, no drilling) and to clean. But you have to buy some extra things.
The sprinklers are like 5 for $ 2 on Aliexpress.
this T-piece has some thread inside (1/2 inch) and the pipe is 20 mm. But I am sure that Home Depot or another store sells those in Imperial sizes.
The build is the same as the one that Airwalker made, but instead of making wholes in your tube for the sprayer, you use the blue T-piece I showed above.
You can see the thread and in there you twist the sprinkler. Easy to clean. Nothing is glued. If you want to desinfect you take it apart and put it in a bucket with some bleach or something. You can go inside the pipes with a brush.
If you have a smaller cloner (like the bucket of Airwalker) then 1 sprinkler will do the job. It spreads the water in wide enough circle.
Then you fix one of those here beneath on the outlet of your aquarium pump.
I tried it out in the shower and the circle is amazingly wide, even with 1 sprinkler and a small aquarium pump. Just make sure your pump is stable and doesn't fall over.
Hope this might help.
