Bush II beat John Kerry in 2004 and won both the popular vote and the electoral. He lost the popular vote in 2000 against Al Gore by over 1/2 million votes. And of course the orange asshole lost the popular vote in 2016 by nearly 3 million votes.
Why is the system set up this way? Shouldn't the person with the most votes win?

The founding fathers themselves argued about the purpose and implantation of the electoral college. Alexander Hamilton viewed the electoral college as a fail safe to correct an election result that could be harmful to the republic. Almost like he could see something like the election of Trump happening.

I think the biggest problem with the system today is the winner-take-all format. If you win a state by half a percentage point, should you get all of the states electors? This is the reason you will almost always have a discrepancy between popular vote and electoral college votes.

i understood it as the same fail safe with many voters being distant farmers or those without education to understand the complexities of government and the issues at hand and ultimately..it was to not let one group over another fall victim to a majority that perhaps were let's say facist or something else evil. what they really didn't consider the checks and balances when you have 2:1, and what that would do to the people of america.

i'm still waiting for my $600 and nancy says it's not the right time. I've been paid $384 UI for August..funny every penny they gave me went into the economy..how could it not?

she's been extremely mum on this- i hope there's some super secret moment to act. she knows more than we are privy..she's waiting for a certain something to happen to pull the trigger.

Obviously, the checks and balances don’t work as designed. I suspect it’s because the founding fathers never envisioned or planned for a partisan two party system.

There is no better example of the fragility of responsible government than the fact that a system designed by the greatest minds of the 18th century can be destroyed 250 years later by an imbecile with an IQ of 78.

and all in four years..and if there were no oversight?

Presidential Historian Beschloss has predicted we are one year away from loss of democracy- i say we're closer.

I would say there isn’t any oversight now but agree that the republic as we know it is on the line. 6 months from now we will know.
