The age of cloning

OK I have a question and want to hear others opinions on this so how long can u do u think clone a plant then put that mother to bud then use one of its cuttings as the next mother if for example you don't want to keep using the same mother plant I was taught to use the 2nd clone generation because after awhile it loses bud size then potency well that's what I was told but what u guys reckon

Im sure genetics degrade or get tired depending on environment, but I grew several OG kush cuts from the 90s until about 2018. I dont think you should worry about it. I have cuts right now I have been growing for 5+ years and are all strong and healthy.

That would be bro-science

Plenty of people run clone to clone if it loss potency that wouldn't be the case

I had a fellow tell me two years was the limit for clones, after that they're toast.

When I asked "why" he said because they "petrify".
Not the word I would choose but with the market how it is now, I would say obsolete. Back in the day with all the legal obstacles, finding a good cut you have to keep. Now, with all the pheno hunting there is an abundance of good cuts. But just like a super hot woman, there is someone out there tired of fucking her, If you know what I mean.

I grow because I love gardening I love dirt and watching the babies grow from seed is awesome takes a little to long tho and by the time they mature my clones are ready to bud or even finished if I wanted but yeah got to start some we're but for me I still do both I get random seeds off mates some times and slam them under some light then see what I get just for the buzz I don't smoke anything funny enough I get the pleasure of watching them grow and good gifts aye can't beat a big bud for Christmas hahahhahahahhaa

No, he really believes the woody growth and loss of vigor is the plant going into a "petrified state". It was a really weird convo. When I asked about cuts that were decades old he said it was impossible. They dont exist.

He also believes S1s produce exact replicas of the mother so there's that too.

Og has prolly largest footprint in the entire industry. As far as flavor it goes pretty much any direction of terpenes unless we’re referring to Matt’s original cuts. That rancid hash smell. Beautiful lol. But if clones went bad after some years. Strains upon todays genetics would be having to start from landrace scratch…well. Every few years.

I think after some time they will unmute some undesirable traits/mutations. But other than that. Stay pretty much the same years and years.

Horticultural science has proven (not opinion, fact) that vegative propagation (aka cloning) produces a plant with an exact copy of the original DNA, and there is no degradation of any of its genetics, or traits. It is actually the same plant, not a "clone" like so many think from watching sci-fi movies.

So weather its keeping a mother plant for 30 years and taking cuttings, or taking a cutting, from a cutting, from cutting (once they stablize) the plant isn't going to change, and is the only possible way to preserve that plant, as seeds will have traits of the parents, but will have a new DNA and genetic makeup.

What does happen though, is people have different grow setups, lights, feeding, environmental factors, in which has a great deal of effect in how the plant grows and finishes, no matter how the mother was.

You can clone from a clone from a clone. The genetics may tire over several years but its relatively easy to reinvigorate old cuts...especially if you keep them healthy with low pest/pathogen pressure.
This is how I grow. I'll grow 12 plants out for one tent and keep 3 of those plants as cloning plants. I then add them to a special side room where I put my babies and smaller clone plants. I wait for them to get big and take all the TOPS only for clones. Works great for perpetual grows like mine.

I know a guy in the Milwaukee area
Who holds dozens of old school cuts
Had it not been for him I may have never believed how long you can keep a plant
shout out brother :bigjoint:
