Advice - Pollen Chucking

Hey y'all

considering chucking some pollen (at some point after a bit more research, and clearing out the space to do this) with some of the strains that are working for the patient.
so far, acapulco gold and grandaddy purple are hitting home runs. other worthies have been found in OG Kush and Northern Lights respectively.

do any of you older/more experienced growers have any resources:
- books
- articles
- videos

that your would point me towards that you would consider to be excellent resources to get started?
also, discussion/stories of personal experiences making your own crosses, mistakes and fixes along the way would be appreciated as well.

please and thanks!

You are working with clones right? You can hope for a great male from somewhere or try making feminized seeds. I have had great success with colloidal silver in making feminized seeds. There can be significant differences in the hybrid depending on the pollen donor, i.e., its worth it to cross 'A x B' and 'B x A'. Then pheno hunt.

not working with anything... yet
i currently have fem seeds of several different strains.

i had only thought to grow out some choice strain males and harvest the pollen... use that on the selected (strain) females.

i had not considered reversing a female. figured that to be more of a "learn to sprint" before learning to walk, but i get what you're driving at... bears some consideration.

as far as using clones, yes, that would be the idea. bit more control to the control environment.

Just look at basic plant breeding techniques.

Chucking pollen is a simple task. You don't need any books or resources unless you planning on creating your own stable IBL that will take generations. If all you want to do is cross this with that then just do it, grow the seeds, and enjoy the product of your efforts.

If you really want to get serious I'd suggest starting with regular seeds rather than fems. That's my preference. Some will disagree and that's OK. All that matters in the end is having something you like and can call your own.

Have fun. It's not the complicated daunting task some make it out to be.

I'm having a go at pollen chucking for the first time myself out of pure necessity,
The best advice I can give after all my setbacks and failures is to use STS not CS, in the beginning STS sounds a bit confusing to mix match blah blah but it is really very simple, and you only have to apply it every three days,

- basic plant breeding. keep it simple. roger that.
- i think giving it a shot to see what i produce (and subsequently determine if i want to continue to my own stable strain(s)) would be the best start.
- starting with regs was where i had intended to start, but pollinating for fem seeds sounds pretty appealing as well... but it hadn't started on my radar. i blame red hard head for planting the earworm on that subject...
- thanks. i will. appreciate your insights.

- STS over CS. got it.

uhh... what's sts and cs? :D
(nah man... i'll look it up.)

thanks for the tip. will check them out and compare/contrast.

There is a pretty good old thread on here from subcool on breeding.

Regular seeds only. In my opinion. Suggest a totally separate area for any males. Be careful you don’t pollinate a plant you didn’t want pollinated or pollinated by that male.
- regs only. got it. had intended to start that way. want to use a GDP male first. seems to mix well and make other great medical strains as offspring.
- i have a separate area (out in garage) i could bring a male to term in... it's only drawback is area not air conditioned, so will be hot as f*ck in summer in pretty friggin cold in winter.
- from what i understand, the pollen can be harvested and frozen for later use. (back crossing?)
- my intent in pollination is to use small amounts on artist paintbrush. mark the branches i pollenate. don't intend to do entire plant pollination... i don't have my retirement land... yet... space IS an issue... (and so are police helicopters. with FLIR cameras. i can't be doing 100 plant pheno hunts. :O )

I’ve used STS successfully many times.
Will usually takes 2 clones. Both will be donor plants as they are used to produce pollen and apply pollen.
One is grown in a 1 gallon planter and used for STS. The other grown in a 2 1/2 gallon planter.
Applying pollen is best between 21-28 days of 12-12. If you time you spray and flower, you will apply fresh pollen to the buds.
It’s all about learning and testing!! Lots of great resources here to learn from.
Happy pollen chucking!!

coreywebster placed a link to a GREAT thread authored by schwaggy p. i am about halfway thru it. some really great info in there, and presented in such a great detailed and logical manner.

i got to the part where he explains how to make DIY STS for reversing target mother clones:
https://www.rollitup.org/t/schwaggy-ps-random-stuff.981386/page-33#post-14900805

i like your idea of the 1 donor 1 recipient methods. small scale. (wish i had more space!) seems a good starting point.

you should check out his method called "polyandric"

How can you tell when a seed is mature, is it when you can see the cover it is in has split open and the seed inside is brown, or does it have to shake out easily or drop by itself ?

Dark brown many times with tiger stripes. And yes the calyx will split allowing you to see it's development. The usually shake out when drying so look on the floor if you're hanging it. Or dry on a try or in a tote.

i was reading thru schwaggy p's thread and got past the section where he explains how to make DIY STS. one of the noted drawbacks was shelf life. evidently the STS needs to be mixed before use and does not store well.

how does the colloidal silver you suggested do with longevity? does a bottle last a few seasons, or is it like STS and need to be mixed fresh each time?
