The fishing thread ( not about fish fertilizer)

One thing that pisses allot of us off when fishing catching sturgeon is when heads are purposely using light gear and it takes them days to land it. Bring that fucker in, and release already. Or keep whatever but a longer fight than needed really stresses them out if they are going to end up being released
Ya man. Hence the heavy gear. They'll still run like the Dickens but I can get them back pretty quick.
Theoretically of coarse
It's like salmon fishing on the north shore. I don't understand it's like they're from a diff planet or something.... I'm landing fish in a few mins and they're fighting them for a half an hour with light braid. Then they look at me like I'm crazy for using 30# on a 8'6 hotshot rod MH.
I love to feel that on a heavy rod. Plus I can set hooks like an animal.

Hm there is no season for them round these parts.... Protected species. But let's say (theoretically of coarse) I did happen to fish for them I would just use my muskie gear 80# braid straight to the hook no leader. Or 40-60# big game mono leader. IF of coarse I did :blsmoke: :fire:
Sturgeon setup for me is 100lb braid to the weight hook is also tied on with 100lb braid.

Not messing around when I catch a Sturgeon.

I had mentioned dacron for leader. That’s the only “braided” i’ve trusted for leaders but i like wire the best.
I usually had 65lb power pro on all my boat rod reels so that’s what i used for sturgeon. Hardly ever lost a sturgeon out of the hundreds of sturgeon i’ve landed.
From the bank i would usually use 30lb mono mainline on spinning reel surf rod. Usually hucking up to 16oz weights, braid destroys your finger, i’ve done it, and usually gonna be pretty hard to cast as far as needed at some spots with that much weight using a casting reel. But either way, i still like my wire leader.

I use 2# Floro for trout & there's 40+ lb bow's and browns in this river
14ft float rod

Hm I duno. My Calcutta conquests seem to cast just fine. And I'm throwing 6oz baits up to 1lbers all day

My older calcutta 400 TE's are considered the holy grail of muskie reels. All has to do how your rod loads.
Ok right on i’ll try something new here soon.
I have to get all new boat rods and reels for the sturgeon in about 4 months when i’ll start targeting them down in the delta. Lost all my other gear in the fire. I’ll prob get 3 that are similar to the older Penn 320/1’s and ugly stick tiger rods for the crew but for daddy, i really like this certain Seeker rod and i had an Avet on it, i’ll pick up something better. And try hucking 16oz from the boat and if I feel it i’ll get a longer rod for casting reels for the bank.
What reel would you recommend?
I still got plenty 300 low profile size reels for the striper/salmon rods but that don’t cut it.

16 oz weights are damn near standard over here due to the current. Absolutely needed from the bank. But yea braid will tear up your finger for sure if you are using a spinning setup. I specifically only use baitcaster setups when big game fishing.

I use a Penns Squal and a Shimano Cardiff 400.

Yes I can absolutely launch with these.

What baitcasting reel you like that will huck our 16oz pyramid weights far?
I would say the farthest i would need to cast is when fishing hood franklin side of the sac. That hole is far out there. even at that little pier on the motezuma i like casting a country mile. What reel you use?

Reels are above. At Montezuma I can make it close to 2/3 of the way across the water from that small peir.

Oh and BTW some fuckhead burnt the floor out of that peir with a BBQ. It's now shut down.
