War

They are really loading up on armor and equipment and it looks like the ground is dying out in some places after a mild winter. We might see some limited offensives by the Ukrainians to try out the new toys, conditions permitting. It can also serve to draw the Russians away from where they really want to hammer them hard. I think drones and that type of "air superiority" and tactical intelligence when coupled with those 150km glide bombs will make it hard for Russian reserves to deal with Ukrainian armored breakthroughs, any Russian armored columns on the roads to meet them would be hammered on that road miles from them. If any got through there's regular HIMARS and MLRS and then M777 and finally mortars. All the while harassed by drones dropping all kinds of shit on them or directing fire on them.

They have discovered their own cheap short-range switch blades available in large quantities, they can save the good military shit for further away higher valued targets. Every tank and APC a $300 drone kills, is one less an expensive Javelin or even Excalibur 155mm round you need to use. Both types of drones commercial and FPV suicide work very well for clearing trenches, bunkers, RPG positions and heavy machine gun nests and even drop grenades right into individual foxholes. Along with artillery preparation, I can see a squadron of drones doing squad level close tactical air support like this saving a lot of guys lives who had to storm those positions, they would be storming trenches full of dead and wounded Russians.

Buzz it trailing blue and yellow smoke over Red square. They will have them goose steppers running and Vlad scrambling for the entrance to Lenin's tomb. A gas-powered plane drone GPS guided, and it would dispense smoke from the wing tips when it hit Red Square then try to fly into the door of Lennin's tomb, with 50 pounds of HE and ruining Vlad's day with any luck. Deploy several and decoys, at least you'll ruin the parade with an air raid siren. A month to prepare for the competition is not much time for the RC plane and UAV community, many spare parts have been used up by the war, but I suppose there is more shit than ever laying around in the country that can be salvaged etc and the military and drone organizations might make entries and have no problem coming up with something. It is a morale booster, PR and propaganda. Vlad will shit a brick if there were twin blue and yellow smoke trails a few hundred feet over read square with the crowd and troops running like mobiks from the drones and the guards shooting at them, pandemonium and they would be pissing themselves laughing in Ukraine when they saw the video.

They will be in serious trouble in a month and are short of manpower, looks like a formula for catastrophe this summer when the Ukrainians strike them hard, very hard, surrender or die and be quick about it. It almost appears Vlad is being forced to write off Ukraine and Crimea, he missed the chance to gather new forces and probably can't equip them with guns and body armor anyway. He got behind the power curve with the sudden action of the west in pouring arms into Ukraine. Mud season foiled his winter offensive again and now his forces are spent and culminating, just before the Ukrainians will strike the untrained poorly equipped and unled depleted mobiks. Spring and summer are fighting season after the ground dries out, the Ukrainians will be ready, the Russians will not.

Russia is running out of soldiers

Russia will have a manpower shortage unless Putin orders another wave of mobilization. In this video I look at some of the numbers and discuss what happened to the soldiers that Russia mobilized in the fall.

how hard would it be to make it stealth enough so it could fly right through the air defenses without showing up on them?

Without using GPS for nap-of-the-earth

Not hard at all since the construction at these scales is composite materials, the only thing that needs RAM covering are the engine or batteries etc, the prop is plastic, composite or wood. Those 10K Chinese drones could do it no problem with a gas engine. They can terrain follow to a degree using GPS and google earth to even spot where the trees are and fly low level down country roads. It's called a 3D waypoint mission and it's as simple as tracing out a layer on google earth and assigning an altitude to each leg of the way points in Ardupilot, an open-source project.

is there a way to get radar cross-section data? Those air defense radars are pretty good, is why I’m asking for more than an over-the-thumb guesstimate.

Take a recent electronics engineering graduate and expose him to the "world" of Lego like technological building blocks and you will be amazed at what they can learn to do and pull off... The RC hobby is very engineering heavy, and many hobbyists are engineers in their day jobs so there is a constant stream of leading-edge innovation in the drone and RC hobby world. They design shit, get a 1000 or 10,000 knocked off in China and proceed to market through the global hobbyist world of RC aircraft, boats and drones. You can do a lot with mass produced parts for cellphones these days from cameras to accelerometers to magnetometers and other goodies like processors.

Yep you can measure the radar cross section in a lab without too much difficulty or expense these days. Send 10 on different waypoint missions to Moscow for the big parade and see how many get through, along with lots of other smaller cheap drones as decoys to distract the defenses and cost the Russians hundreds of millions in SAMs launched! When they got to Red square they could perform for the crowd and one might even be able to carry and launch a HARM at those pesky defenses around Red Square.

If the Russians know they are coming, there will be so much EW around red square you'd be able to cook a fucking chicken in the middle of the place from the microwave flux! The Russians would cook their own fucking crowd!

I dunno if this is any more than a PR stunt, an amateur competition it appears, but it could be useful to make the Russians expend a lot of AA missiles to protect their big "victory day" parade from humiliation. Getting over red square is symbolic, but not really that important and if 4 or 5 drones did get through and crash in Red square from the EW, it would send a message that the war is now in their face and the free ride is over. The video of yellow and blue smoke streaks in the sky over the parade would make great video though!

I’m using a different aesthetic, I think. While the shotgun approach you describe will no doubt work, imagine the effect of sending a solitary drone right down the aisle of most intense surveillance, and having it land on target without having been previously detected. Especially if it is big enough to carry a lot of kaboom.
