Schumer: ‘Cannot think of worse welcome’ for Zelensky than House stopgap proposal
Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) blasted the House GOP stopgap funding proposal on the Senate floor Monday, criticizing it for not including funding for Ukraine and other Democratic requests.

“And with no Ukraine funding, the proposal is an insult to Ukraine and a gift to [Russian President Vladimir] Putin. I cannot think of a worse welcome for [Ukrainian President Volodymyr] Zelensky who visits us this week than this House proposal, which ignores Ukraine entirely,” Schumer said.

Zelensky is slated to meet with President Biden this week and hold discussions with lawmakers, as well as visit the United Nations General Assembly in New York. While support for Ukraine is widespread, a handful of House Republicans have been outspoken in their opposition to more U.S. funding for the war-torn nation.

Schumer described the House GOP proposal as a “hard-right screed,” accusing Republicans of not working on a bipartisan solution to keep the government open. The White House asked Congress to attach supplemental funding for Ukraine, disaster relief and border security to a continuing resolution (CR) to fund the government.

Without those requests, the CR is unlikely to pass the Democratic-controlled Senate. A group of Republicans announced an internal deal for the stopgap bill Sunday night. If approved, it would extend the funding deadline by a month, cut all spending except for the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs, and enact a large part of the House GOP’s marquee border bill, H.R. 2.

It has already been met with opposition from enough Republicans to put it in jeopardy even in the lower chamber.
A CR or other funding bill must be passed by Sept. 30 to keep the government from shutting down.
Schumer also targeted Republicans for proposing cuts to nondefense spending in his remarks Monday.

“Instead of working with Democrats to keep government open, House Republicans want to cut virtually all nondefense spending by a devastating 8 percent, 8 percent,” he said Monday. “Eight percent cuts to law enforcement, cancer research and other critical priorities. Not one penny is dedicated to the president’s disaster relief request despite the anguish in so many states. No health extenders are included, no attempt to reauthorize the FAA [Federal Aviation Administration].”

Project 2025/Agenda 47 Republicans have plainly stated an intention to gut the Federal government across the board. This is just the movie trailer.

They have to make it through 2024 and at the rate they are fucking up and with Donald's help they might not do so well considering the headwind they are facing on abortion and social issues in general. Then there might be Trump disqualified and landing like a turd in their punchbowl mid election with a conviction. If he is disqualified over J6, it will put all those maga politicians who followed him in a tough spot, just because trump is disqualified doesn't mean he won't demand their loyalty for his write in candidacy!

Most media are making the same mistake as you and laughing it off. This is not new; they did it in 2016.

The thing to keep in sharp focus is that such a plan is the product of hundreds or thousands of powerful people who have been awaiting a way to enact Reichstag fire 2.1. (2.0 was Jan 6.)
They are emphatically dangerous, and more patient and intelligent than their trained ape.

I'm not laughing it off, just stating what they are up against, including a possible write in candidacy by a disqualified Trump, which would be funny and sink the GOP. I think they lost the middle of the country, the one that decides elections and are spiraling downward IMO, with shitty candidates and poor management. Largely incompetent magats have taken over other party offices and where that happened, they are broke.

I'm certainly not advocating complacency, but a maximum effort by patriots instead, only a landslide can really move the needle a lot and provide a mandate for change. However, a useful majority will allow much to be done and remove many of the republican's electoral advantages and address many of the country's problems..

I do not believe that removing or disqualifying P01135809 will seriously spike the Repugs’ guns.

I also think that landslide that you so tirelessly promote is also unlikely. Judging by the current House of Representatives, the forces behind the magazi movement are consolidating power rather than losing it.

We need to explore realistic stratagems for blunting the extremist effort.

Any clear victory for the democrats will do, but the bigger the victory the bigger the mandate for change and the more rapid and even radical it can be. Trump holds tremendous sway inside the GOP and has the majority of the base even with all his trouble, treason and obvious lies. Don't underestimate the stupidity of republicans and generally speaking things are so tight electorally that just 10 or 20% of their base either staying home in disgust or spoiling their ballots with a Trump write in, would be a disaster at the polls for them.

At this point we don't know for certain he will be disqualified by the SCOTUS before the GOP primary, but I would put odds on it and so would the bookies. If he is disqualified, he might promote a write in campaign, if he thought it might make him too big to jail, it would at least be ego food and he will soon be starving for that.

Germany announces fresh weapons package for Ukraine I DW News

67,837 views Sep 19, 2023 #Germany #Ukraine #Leopards
Germany has announced another assistance package for Ukraine, pledging 400 million Euros in weapons and aid. It includes ammunition, armoured vehicles, mine-clearing systems and supplies for fighting through winter.

Meanwhile representatives of more than 50 countries are gathering at the US air base at Ramstein in southern Germany. It's the fifth time the western allies have met to discuss their support for Kyiv in its defense against Russia's invasion. Ukraine is expected to make another appeal for the delivery of longe-range weapons, including cruise missiles from Germany.

Germany has already delivered some heavy weapons to Ukraine. After initial resistance, Berlin agreed to approve the delivery of its Leopard heavy tanks to help Kyiv fight off Russia's invasion. At least 10 are already on the ground, with up to 100 to be sent by several countries. DW's Max Zander has been to Southern Ukraine to see how they're making a difference on the frontline.

AA defense would be important if Russia tried to attack the Ukrainian power grid again or fuck with the nuclear power plant. Either could trigger a massive Ukrainian drone attack on the Russian power grid in European Russia (where 80% live) that the Russians are not equipped either to defend or deal with the aftermath. Unlike Ukraine I doubt they could call on much help from outside, perhaps China, but such things take time, even for one several dozen would be another matter altogether.

Ukraine now has one of the best AA defense systems in the world and uses guns on trucks to deal with cheap drones for the most part and can use guns around vital transformers, with night vision they can even be used effectively at night or are radar directed automatically. This winter the Ukrainians could strike the Russian power grid very effectively, but the Russian's could not return the favor nearly as effectively. They could have enough drones of various kinds to the turn the lights off in Russia this winter, if provoked, and once they are off it could be a very long time before they are on again.

Long range missiles could cut Russian rail bridges inside Russia on the half dozen routes leading into Ukraine and completely fuck the Russians instantly. It might be a bit too early for that, not enough of the fuckers and their equipment have been destroyed yet and I'm sure the Ukrainians are working on missiles that can take out Russian Rail bridges 100 miles inside their borders. It would be the logical thing for them to do to stop any threats from them, since the Russians can't operate any more than 50Km from their railheads in any force and are completely dependent on the rails.

I'm sure someone in the Pentagon thought about this decades ago when figuring out how to defend against a Soviet hoard invading Europe and NATO. NATO has many options for destroying Russian rail bridges far to the rear, cutting off the Russians in front and trapping the rest and their logistics inside Russia. These bridges are very difficult to repair, often located in the middle of nowhere and are undefended from air attack, they can take months to replace or repair in the best of conditions, but when a few dozen go down at once it presents problems, bigger ones if the repair crews are killed by follow up strikes at random.
