Just heard of Russian troops near Kharkiv being afflicted w/a "mouse virus", contact w/infected urine causing intense headache, rashes, and bleeding in the eyes.
Probably the same thing a friend got here that almost killed him. Carried by Deer mice and called Hanta Virus. He got it cleaning out an old shed on his farm. Then 6 months later had a pretty bad stroke. Pretty old so don't know if that was related. We've had a lot of mice in our place this fall. Still catching 3 or 4 a day in traps set here and there. Went to open a new 35lb of cat food sitting in the mud room for 3 months or so. Over half of it gone with a 2" round hole in the back of the bag.

Nasty stuff.

Some years back they had a nasty spike of it in the desert Southwest. First time I’d heard of it.

(edit) no wonder it made me think of Four Corners. I got to see the place in ‘03. Gorgeous.

Because the farmers could not pull the crops off the fields the mouse population exploded. The Ukrainians are probably dealing with it also.
Nasty, with the Russian troops poorly led and equipped chances are they are NOT getting proper antibiotics, don't know if this is a "legacy" virus or something "novel" or if it's transmissible,it bares watching though as influenza was a factor in WW1.

I know you can pick up a plethora of shit just by inhaling the dried fecal dust from these varmints, they are indominatable and survivalists, maybe get yourself a canine in the terrier family like a Jack Russell,my friend has 2 and they are killers, think they were bred to keep mice/rat pop in check going back to sailing ship days.I had a bag of 25lb. black oil sunflower seed for feathered friends in the cellar and the same shit as you describe happened.

Russia launches ‘most massive aerial attack’ of Ukraine war, Kyiv says
Russia has launched 122 missiles and 36 drones against Ukrainian targets Friday in what officials said was the “most massive aerial attack” yet in the nearly two-year-old war.

The Associated Press reported that the strikes killed at least 24 civilians across the country. Casualties have been reported in Kyiv, Lviv, Dnipro, Kharkiv and Odesa, the Kyiv Independent reported.

The Ukrainian Air Force said it intercepted and destroyed 114 of the 158 total missiles and drones that Russian shot into the country overnight.

According to Air Force commander Mykola Oleschuk, it was the “most massive aerial attack” since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022.

“Thank you all for your hard work! Many lives have been saved! But there are also losses,” Oleschuk wrote on his official Telegram channel. “Condolences to the families of the vicitms!”

The previous largest attack from Russia was in November 2022, when 96 missiles were launched against Ukraine. On March 9, 81 missiles were launched, according to air force records, the AP reported.

Air Force spokesperson Yuriy Ignat announced on air that an attack of this scale as not been seen “for a long time.”

President Volodymyr Zelensky posted online that among the buildings damaged in the strikes were a maternity ward, educational facilities, a shopping mall, multi-story residential buildings, private homes and commercial storage.

“Today Russia used nearly every type of weapon in its arsenal,” he posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

Zelensky said services are working to provide necessary aid and the Ukrainian military will “surely respond to terrorist strikes.”

The strikes come as fighting has slowed to a near-standstill before winter and both sides suffer the effects of a long and costly conflict, The Hill previously reported.

Ukraine has continued to push the United States for additional military aid that it says is critical for its defense in the war that nears the two-year mark. Zelensky failed to convince Congress to pass an aid bill before both chambers adjourned for a holiday break.

Congress is expected to restart negotiations over a package that combines aid for the United States’ southern border and aid for Ukraine once members reconvene in Washington after the holidays.

Furious Putin ‘orders revenge raids’ after humiliating Crimea warship attack

Putin has unleashed a series of devastating air strikes across Ukraine (Image: Getty/@BNONews)
Vladimir Putin has unleashed a series of deadly missile attacks in multiple major Ukrainian cities, leaving dozens injured and at least 13 dead. The Russian leader targeted capital Kyiv, as well as Kharkiv, Lviv, Odessa and "many others", in "revenge raids" following the destruction of a Russian warship in Crimea.
New images have shown the Russian warship was completely destroyed. Despite the Kremlin’s insistence that this is not the case, they still embarked on a mass missile campaign last night in its biggest air attack since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, says The Independent.

Ukraine was targeted with 48 drones and 110 missiles which targeted critical infrastructure, industry and military facilities, according to the Ukrainian military. Ukraine’s army chief said they managed to down 27 drones and 87 cruise missiles during what he described as “the most massive attack from the air”.

Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence Twitter page confirmed Russia had hit “residential buildings, hospitals, schools, and shopping malls around the country”. The assault came from hypersonic, ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as the "extremely hard-to-intercept" X-22 type, according to the Ukrainian air force.

The latest death toll is confirmed at eight so far. Dnipro is the worst hit in terms of deaths, with four killed and dozens injured after a maternity hospital was among the targets damaged. Two have been found dead in Odesa, one in Kyiv and another in Lviv. In Lviv, a residential building was hit by a missile.

Footage on social media appears to show devastating scenes of destruction, especially at a residential tower block. Cars were destroyed and huge swathes of smoke blew around in videos shared. One photo shows a shopping centre which has been bombed, while another video shows a huge fireball emerging from a tower block.

We have 3 cats working overtime but they aren't strong enough to move shit around to get at the little buggers. I got 3 dead ones yesterday to toss on the chicken coop roof as treats for the local magpies and crows. Now I'm going to have them nesting around the place as they think of that roof as a food source now. :) Just went and checked the traps and had two more to toss up there.

We have a dog in the front yard but he ain't no terrier tho he goes after mice just fine. More to keep the crack heads out of the yard than mice tho. :D

If it's a virus then antibiotics are of no use. That hantavirus from deer mice stays active for ages so hiding out in old barns and outbuildings is a good way to pick it up. Non-transmissible between people.
