And here we have the type of thinking that kept me out of unions all my working life. And ... this is exactly the type of thinking that is driving the Big Three out of business.

Nothing based upon productivity. Nothing based upon creating a profit. Nope ... its all about seniority. Hell yeah ... the longer one is on the job, the more one should make ... as long as the survival of the company isn't taken into consideration.

While were at it, let's base promotions on seniority too. That way, the Peter Principle will be in effect and the incompetent, with seniority, will be promoted over someone who has more talent and a better work ethic.

This way, labor can drive profit out of the equation and management can drive labor and the company out of business. And the taxpayer, along with his children, grand children and great grand children are supposed to pay for this crap? Where's the morality in all of this?

Chapter 11 bankruptcy and a renegotiated union contract is the only moral way to go.

although i dont agree with some of what you say Vi, you make a great point here. they are working on a prehistoric system which has been outdated for a long time..

now my question is other than cheaper labor, and progressive design, what are the asian car manufactures doing differenly that makes them so profitable? i mean hell toyota has some of the largest facilities in the country right now and they are doing fine

Ask THMs (Toyota, Honda, Mitsubishi) suppliers about how they are treated (a lot worse than the Big 3 treat theirs)

the downfall of this nation is starting....buckle up people and be safe everyone...
True, the chickens from the greed are coming home to roost. Let's examine the root causes:
1.Hyperinflation of home prices by unscrupulous real estate salesmen.
2.Un workable swindles by unsavory loan sharks.
3.Bundling of ARMs to unscrupulous speculators in the "loan/banking" industry on wall street.
4.Short selling for profit by same speculators for megabucks.
5.Money dissapears into thin air, or more like it, wall street speculators home safes.

Seeing Conspiracies, Med?

I really doubt that all the insurances agents in the country (or even in a single state, or a single city) got together, and decided to work together to inflate prices.

The market inflated prices, due to the sudden availability of cheap credit, and very low loan requirements.

If you had a union job, maybe you wouldn't have to "do your thing on the side". Maybe you'd have enough to pay rent, feed your kids, put clothes on their backs and that wonderful Bonus, health care for you and your family, what a concept, eh?

Not at all, I know human nature and 6% (which is the nominal commission percentage on home sales) of a million is a lot more than 6% of 100K. Voila, the reason homes are so inflated. Ask Vi. He'll hem and haw, but that's the real reason.

You have no fucking clue about my work ethic, present or past. If you knew the truth, you'd be fucking amazed ... not to mention, totally outclassed.

Yeah right. I'd like to have seen you throw 5,000 50 lb bags of lime 12 High in a 130 degree boxcar in july in vegas, hell yeah, you probably couldn't have lifted one. I did this for 6 months one summer when I was 19. I decided that wasn't for me, but the money was great, I made about twice what the average worker made. Those bags came down a set of rollers as fast as you could grab one and toss it, the next one was right there, if you would have fallen, you would have been buried in a couple of minutes. We used to average 5,000 bags a shift, 8 hrs. Just because I decided to do honest work, is not a reason to diss. me.

Try doing it for 13 years, numb nutz.

Honestly, before you desparage someone's ability to put up with hard physical labor, you really should learn a little about the person, Med.

Tell me oh Obie-wan, how you tossed 50lb bags of shit for 12 hrs a day for 13 years. Remember, I've seen your scrawny body and I doubt you ever hoisted 50 lbs above your head, at least not 5,000 times a day. Tell me more. This is getting good, before long it will be 100 lb bags for 20 hrs a day for 26 years. I can document my claim, what say you.

I don't have to tell you anything, Med. I know what I know ... and that's good enough for me. You can take this to the bank though ... those 13 years were spent on one of the last of the hard jobs.

And about that scrawny body ... I know that seeing a body in great physical shape is a rarity for you. The lack of FAT is not "scrawny." Oh, I do realize that in the world you live in, physical fitness isn't the norm ... nor is it the norm in most of America these days. Maybe I should just give you a pass on the issue and let it stand at that. You, like most Americans just don't know the difference.

Eat up lad! Eat that butter! Eat that cheese! Eat that bacon! Eat that processed food! Sit on that couch! Enjoy that type-2 diabetes and be happy with your obesity!

Last of the hard jobs, let me guess, spreading asphalt. I've known a couple of asphalt guys, outside of the heat, the machines do most of the hard work, All they do is stand around with a little asphault rake and smooth out the imperfections. Ya wanta know a real hard job, tying steel. Yeah, I did that also. Try bending over all day with a pair of pliers and a roll of ty-wire on your belt, lacing rebar together, when the day is over, you cant stand up straight for 20-30 minutes. Try muscling #6 bar all day for bridge abutments. or tying vertical walls. Yes son, there are harder jobs than asphalt. Do you know what a 20 ft. section of # 8 rebar weighs?

yes medman, i do!!! I worked for a company building bridges for 2 years and its a hell of a job tying rebar all day and then raking concrete on top of that, its was discouraging to see concrete trucks lined up one after another ready to start pouring when i had already been going for 2 hours straight, definately hard work.
