Grew up on the Maumee River in Toledo. Waterfowl on fall and walleye in spring. Summertime was perch in Maumee bay. Day after a noreaster head to the manmade island for giant mudfish like suckers and huge carp. They feed on the dead baitfish from the storms.
Now I live in sw ohio and I have a farm pond with bass and bluegill. I have spent a lot of time on my pond and I have several very large fish including a sift feeder 3 foot long that scares children and dogs.

I got a chance to get on the water this past weekend and caught 6 catfish under 8 pounds, on chicken livers. If I could have gotten some fresh shad I feel like I could have probably got a 20-40 pound blue . I saw 6 being weighed in at the dock over 25 .

I use them, I’ve even done the cherry jello on hotdogs but it’s a sticky mess. And yeah hotdogs work pretty good. I think shad are probably the best bait around here but you just never know what they will eat. Ohh grasshoppers are awesome too.
Chubs, gizzard shad, bluegill, white suckers, rudd. Used em all
