what to tell electrician?

why do you need to tell them anything? if you hire electrician to wire up for you...pay him for the job...they dont ask and quite frankly dont care

this is a good question...tell him you are building a small work space and you will nee to power 2-3 ,15-20amp tools at a time....this would tell him enough info to get the power requirements you need...

just tell him you are a NUT, and you want to have the dream! more power and no loss of it! done deal....green paper makes happy workers, especially if it has presidents pictures on them

they do ask and they do care...not for legal reasons for liability...when you ask an electrician to run you a new service he will want to know for what so he can power you up accordinally....your average household 15a circuit wont support 3000w of lights and the other eviroment equipment needed to run that room without problem, therefore you need to up your amperage and the elctrician will more than likely ask a few questions, not to be nosey just to cover his ass for liability.

Tell him you are starting a band and will be practicing in the basement. You will need enough power to run 3 or 4 big amps.

Where abouts in the house is this to be?? That will matter for your story..
Don't volunteer any story, but you don't want to be standing there looking stupid if he asks, so you should have a story ready..
Edit: Sorry, somehow I overlooked the basement statement..
Its Christmas time though, so you don't need to know anything about tools in the event he wants to talk carpentry.. You can just say that you aren't the carpenter.. You're just getting the setup done as a gift.. Actually that story would work year round..

I just had the cable guy install new lines and forgot that I had left my bong sitting out on the shelf right where he was working. My wife was home but when i realized she said it was to late. Later when we were testing the fax and my wife told him to write "Hi" on the paper and fax it to her mom to test the line, he wrote "High".....

I agree. If you were to buy a home improvement book or look around on the internet you could learn everything you needed to know. It's super simple to run some romex and install a breaker.

Tell him to beat it,then go to the home depot & buy a book on electricity for $20,then do it youself.
Running 3 15 amp outlest will cost you less than $100 total doing it yourself,you'll pay $1,000 or better for an electrician to come do it.
Why are so many people flat out terrified to install a new outlet ? its easy as hell.

nice - i always wanted to be in a band -i think that should work just fine
as far as doing it myself-no way i have not a handy bone in my body- it sucks but i have to get some one in for that part.

An electrician will know how to make proper connections.. If you're confident in your ability to do that with a tad of research then I too would say that doing it yourself is the best option..
I've just seen some scary pisspoor connections ppl thought were perfect that make me balk at saying its easy enough to do yourself..
Be especially careful with connections if you have Aluminum wiring.. Google that specifically if you do to learn about pig-tailing, and OX-Guard etc..
