PROTO PIPE , is it just a Nor Cal thing ?

just wondering how many people have used a ProtoPipe. I included a few pics. These pipes are made in Willits , CA. If you have a real "proto" the P.O.Box for the company will be in the base where the chamber attaches. A "self contained" pipe, includes stash chamber, resin trap(not pictured-bottom of pipe) ,poker, lid. To clean this pipe , you simply use the poker to push the resin trap out the bottom and clean, then use poker to push a match through the mouth piece. Round chamber for stash will hold almost an 1/8th if you pack it tight.bongsmilie:bigjoint:

I've used one before, quite extensively in fact. However, I'm not a big fan of smoking out of metal pieces. I prefer glass or joints personally.

Back to the point though, I found the Proto Pipe to be pretty convenient, and if you do an excellent job of grinding, it will hold a lot of dope. Great for the stoner on the go. But if I'm out and about smoking, I only take joints, no paraphernalia. That's asking for trouble in my opinion.

My bro had one about 20 years ago, he loved that thing. I thnk he eventually lost a piece of it somewhere along the line, it really bummed him out.

i still have my 3rd proto and use it when im fishing. the stash tube is perfect for takin a couple bowls to the lake. also, the swinging lid makes it easier to light in windy conditions. im in washington and protos are at every headhshop around here, so its not just a norcal thing.

I didn't know this existed until right now, but it sounds just about perfect for camping. Especially with that swinging lid. It's like a bunch of stoner engineers just got together and were like, "Okay, boys. What's one thing you hate happening when you smoke"

And one guy's like "Resin. Shit always clogs my piece"
"Wind. I wind up halfway through a hit, and suddenly my herb's on the ground."
"Misplacing my bag. Nothing worse than getting to a spot and turning out an empty pocket."
And the guy with the pencil was like, "Done."

That thing sounds awesome. Does anyone know how much those cost?

i havent seen someone with a protopipe in years... but everybody used to have one... guess cause they are so good on the jobsite

we use to use them back in the day but never cared for them too much. seems like they were always clogged and needed to be cleaned a lot imo. i bet they work great for some though.

well they fucked that all up. i guess if you fuck up the tar trap you are SOL.





Tar Traps are no longer Available, every Trap is custom fit to its pipe


  1. Make sure you remove the "poker", that holds the tar trap in.​
  2. On a solid surface, Place your Proto Pipe on the wooden pipe holder so that the trap is centered over the 9/16" hole.​
  3. Place the poker into the center hole of the bowl.​
  4. Using hammer or similar item, tap the Poker until it is out.​
  5. Print Proto Pipe Cleaning Instructions and clean your pipe. Turn Pipe upside down with lid closed and screw in small hole. Start the trap by hand with the 2 dots aligned. Use the wooden part of the hammer, or similar item to replace the tar trap to prevent denting it. ​
  6. I suggest using a small amount of Vaseline (or if its leaking see below) to lubricate the trap before re-install for future removal and cleaning.​

no i was reading that link. they say you can't interchange tar traps, so if you fuck it up you can't order a new one. you have to get a whole new pipe. why did they change the design???????

i had one 15 years ago. i thought i was going to quit smoking so i throw it out the door into the ivy out in front of my apartment. i spent the next 3 months looking for it. i never found it. i knew right w3i threw it, it just disappeared. had pot in it and everything.

oh, gotcha... cant blame you for tryin.. but you know you never find anything you lose in ivy and other groundcovers..:-P

I keep mine around for a mountain trip. I have found the secret to the bottom is melt a little resin when you clean and put it back in. Then when its time to clean again you just torch the bottom a bit, take the poker and it slides right out like it was greased. My buddy took my first one when I quit""" My ex took my second one. I plan on keeping this one lol

My buddy got pulled over and searched, they picked up his proto looked at it and put it back down and let him go. They never even asked what it was
