It is unbelievable to me that someone would take the stance that non-sapient beings can be treated cruelly and painfully with impunity.
We know animals feel pain, can communicate, etc. Treating animals humanely is something that is the logical end of being sentient. The fact that we can consciously observe animal behavior, see that they can feel fear, pain, stress as well as pleasure, comfort, etc. tells me and most non-sociopathic individuals that we should generally treat them with kindness.
