I spent 4 yrs in the service and we had random tests often. Is it possible to get away with it? Yes, but there is a zero tolerance policy. If you get caught there is no excuse or second chance. You get a dishonorable discharge and a one way ticket home. Then I imagine you would have an interesting time explaining to any future employer why you got kicked out of the military.

If you like to smoke and cannot commit to stopping for at least 4 years then don't do it.

You can get way with smoking right now. They are not really doing a lot of drug testing right now with recruiting being such a problem. They didn't drug test any of my buddies in the reserve before they re-activated them. My reserve time ended in 2001. Thank god. I partied the whole time I was in! But that was 86 - 92. Plus the Army got me really strung out on pain killers. Don't join the Army unless you like Afghanistan, The Navy isn't to bad you don't get shot at allot they have an infantry too there called Marines. My buddy hates the fact that the Marines are a department of the Navy.... He says it is the Men's Department!

Partied like i had a job but yea I partied hard. Most of the people in the army end up drinking way to hard. At least that was my experience. I was strung out on Painkillers for three years and I never got pwned. Right now the military is not in the biz of kicking people out unless you are gay (how fucking stupid is that?) If you are gonna join up go to the Navy. I would never go back in the Army. In the Navy you get to go cool places like San Diego, Japan, Greece, the Philippines, Hawaii. In the Army you get to go wonderful places like Texas, Georgia, Afghanistan, Iraq. About the only cool places the Army gets to go is Germany and Korea.

Very thoughtful question. I commend you for weighing your options.

I went to college then went into the military afterward. Like you I was unsure what I wanted to do, but I decided to go off to college. Today a liberal arts degree isn't much help in the business world. If I had it to do over again, I would definitely join the military first and use that time to figure out how I wanted to spend the rest of my working life.

The discipline and self-confidence one gains in the military is a huge advantage. Plus you can save a lot of money if you are smart. I have not seen any statistics, but I would wager you that veterans who go to college do very well as a group.

A couple of years slugging it out in the military will give you time and incentive to figure out your chosen path. But be aware, illicit drug use is out of the question. The risks are too high. I'm sure everybody knows someone who used illicit drugs in the service, as did I. In my experience, most of those guys washed out eventually; some got caught with hot piss while others fucked themselves in other ways.

Best of luck to you.

As a former Marine and a current full time college student, joining the military out of high school sure as shit beats doing nothing. I will say Johnny is spot on though. People got caught, and it is NOT worth it. It's not quite zero tolerance, as I knew people who popped, just got brig time and back to the fleet. Still, it is on your military record and no one likes being someone elses bitch. You will be scrubbing toilets and picking up cigarette butts a LOT if you get popped.

Same goes with getting caught drinking under 21. It's annoying, and stupid, but it's a fact. Try to go overseas first since your 18. Hopefully, by the time you come back, you'll be 21. Also, depending on where you go, (from what I understand) the Army adopts the drinking age of the host country ;)

Still though, i'm not the biggest Army fan. I would suggest ANY other service before the Army. Not hating cause I was a Marine, I just sincerely believe each service has unique benefits, and really, the Army's only benefit is it promotes FAST, and that mostly translates to good pay. Trust me though, unless you're a retard, money shouldn't be much of an issue. With that, think about the others benefits, and give it real thought.

I'll put it to you this way; when I was thinking about joining, an Army recruiter came to my school. His pitch? "The army will pay you if you go bald, if you go sterile, if you get an ingrown toe nail." I still wanted to shoot shit, so the Marines were my choice.

I'm sure you'll choose well, and GOOD LUCK wherever you go!

I will further state that if I had it to over again I would join the Corps. As a branch, the esprit de corps cannot be topped.

As an Army veteran, I will state categorically that there are actually two Armies. The very large support Army and the comparatively small combat Army. I was in the latter. My division deployed all over the world.

A young man can enlist in any of the combat arms and do plenty of shooting. If he so desired he could go Airborne, Ranger, even Special Forces. The sky is the limit.

Hooah!

I was in the Navy from 1987 - 1996. I smoked out occasionally, as did quite a few others. I passed every piss test by simply flushing prior to pissing in the cup. Either that, or my sample was never tested and I just got lucky. Or, their testing procedures sucked. When I say I smoked "occasionally", I probably smoked out maybe 10 times in 9 years. I knew guys who got busted. My supervisor got busted and was kicked out with no retirement after 18 years.

In any event, it's possible to smoke occasionally without getting caught. But, the risk isn't worth it. Neither is the anxiety of wondering if you're going to get busted.

If you have the means to afford college now, I would go. Start knocking out your requirements even if you don't know what you're going to major in. Hopefully, you'll figure it out along the way. You can always choose the military later if the college thing doesn't go well.

If you choose the military, pick a job that will also be useful in the civilian world. Keep in mind that working for the government as a civilian, or working for a major government contractor will still subject you to drug testing.

If I had to do it over again, I would choose the Coast Guard. The enlisted members have a much better quality of life than the other services. They are simply treated better, better food, berthing, etc. And, you get to pull over drug smugglers on the high seas.

Best of luck to you.

i kinda thought if i joined anything else but the army, would be kinda sucky. i wanna go through the tough training and what not. i enjoyed being pushed during wrestling practice for 3 hours. even though i wanted to puke after the first couple of downs.

my coworker was in the navy i believe, i heard he had a sucky ass job there. we worked some plave where it was VERY hot he said. in a sub. i believe.

also i have a torn ACL, think they would know? even with a torn acl ccould i join? or should i keep quite and hope my knee won;t snap, and if idoes would they pay for everything?

i wouldn't wanna pull em over...but after thinking about joining it made me kinda pissed that ppl would be staying here, in america, growing weed and making easy money, toking, while i was in the military working hard. made me kinda think twice about marijuana and how everyone here thinks it should be legal. i also reminded myself that if i did join...It was my CHOICE to join. right?

can i talk to any recruit? and they can answer my questions about the navy, army, etc?
A recruit will only be able to tell you about basic training and not much else.

I can boil that down for you:

Your head will resemble a cue ball. Everybody will look alike. Even your farts will smell the same as those of the people around you.
Push-ups.
Minimum contact with the outside world.
Very little sleep.
More push-ups.
Drill practice. Drill, drill, and more drill.
Demanding physical training. Lots of it. Including push-ups.
Lots of yelling and cursing.
Even more push-ups.
Basic Rifle Marksmanship, protective gas masks, and hand grenades.
Sitting in bleachers listening to boring lectures when you are exhausted. Don't nod off unless you want to do some more push-ups.
Guard duty. Fire guard sucks ass but everybody does it.
You will bond with some. You will hate some. You will laugh a little. You will sweat a lot.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot. Be prepared to do a few push-ups.

If you meant recruiter, forget about it. Them sonsabitches get paid to lie to you. You'll know your recruiter is lying to you because his lips will be moving.

Yeah, I think I would.

It's kind of like LSD in that once you do it, your life is never the same afterward. Your perspective of the world is altered irrevocably.

A few other things to look forward to:
Obstacle course.
Confidence course.
Bayonet training.
Hand to hand combat training, rudimentary but fun nonetheless.
Road marches with full rucksack. Twelve miles if I remember.
Live-fire combat simulations.
And push-ups.
