Fuel Taxes Must Rise, Harvard Researchers Say

By SINDYA N. BHANOOTo meet the Obama administration’s targets for cutting greenhouse gas emissions, some researchers say, Americans may have to experience a sobering reality: gas at $7 a gallon.
To reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the transportation sector 14 percent from 2005 levels by 2020, the cost of driving must simply increase, according to a forthcoming report by researchers at Harvard’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs.
The 14 percent target was set in the Environmental Protection Agency’s budget for fiscal 2010.

In their study, the researchers devised several combinations of steps that United States policymakers might take in trying to address the heat-trapping emissions by the nation’s transportation sector, which consume 70 percent of the oil used in the United States.

Most of their models assumed an economy-wide carbon dioxide tax starting at $30 a ton in 2010 and escalating to $60 a ton in 2030. In some cases researchers also factored in tax credits for electric and hybrid vehicles, taxes on fuel or both.

In the modeling, it turned out that issuing tax credits could backfire, while taxes on fuel proved beneficial.

“Tax credits don’t address how much people use their cars,” said Ross Morrow, one of the report’s authors. “In reverse, they can make people drive more.”

Dr. Morrow, formerly a fellow at the Belfer Center, is a professor of mechanical engineering and economics at Iowa State University
Researchers said that vehicle miles traveled will increase by more than 30 percent between 2010 and 2030 unless policymakers increase fuel taxes.

Of course fuel taxes must rise. It is a limited resource with inelastic demand (at the moment).

We will never run out of oil. But eventually the price will rise high enough (because it is a limited resource) that some alternative will be the cheaper choice. I would like to put forth the hope that the United States be the country that researches and develops that cheaper choice. Green jobs will keep us alive in the face of 30% of our national debt financed by foreigners. Let's take those green jobs away from India and China.

now why will the prices rise as per this story? is it because of supply like you said ????(liar) or smothing else?

lol i just proved you guys wrong and give you proof how this lie about global warming will bankrupt the country take my money your money and thousands of jobs

everything that is shipped will be more expensive including your granola bars:hug:

all this over suposed Gloabal Warming that is not even happening

and you try to spin in it into somthing totally different.

you are either delusional, very dumb, or a lieing manipulator

Global warming is REALLY about redistribution of wealth ... nothing more.

Scaring those easily scared is all that it needs.... the actual issue is irrelevant. The perception is everything.

So you "proved" climate change is false because you read - without substantiating the facts or following up with any more research - that some researchers say, Americans may face $7.00 gasoline prices?

Do you see why it's a little hard for me to take you seriously, dude?

I think he's just throwing icing on the false data "fudge" cake.

It's all unraveling ... as it should.

The middle ages prove one point swift and sure. Science cannot determine today WHAT is happening or WHY.

The middle ages was localized, today it's global.

Scientists know that.

Scientists do not know that at all. Only the record keeping at the time was local. The weather was global....you think it was warm only in the record keeping areas... Oh my!

They simply DO NOT KNOW enough about weather....especially long term cycles.

And since it has been shown that the global data you love to quote was "cherry picked" (many weather stations were simply not included....yah know the ones that screwed up the hoax), it is delusional to then say the middle ages aren't valid. They are.

You heard me. We will never run out of oil. It is a limited resource. When supply is low enough, it will drive prices to crazy extremes. When the price of gas is higher than the price of the competing alternative, people will switch to the competing alternative instead, and whatever high-priced oil is left will remain. We will never run out of oil.

Simple economics. No need for a double take

at that point we have pretty much run out. unless you want to count a few drops. but it's gone and we've moved on, due to the LIMITED supply.

Would you be surprised if the price went high enough for us to move on to an alternative before we got close to 'a few drops'? I hear stories of folks converting cars to run on fryer grease all the time. Fryer grease is pretty cheap I bet

I think for the weight, gasoline is pretty cheap in comparison to other liquids. Milk, veg. oil, ect. isn't it?
