What tool and method do you use to check the trichromes. Do you cut a piece of leaf off and look through a microscope, do you use a monacle? etc..

Let me know...

pull a plant out of the hps light into sunlight, or w/e....then you can cut a sugar leaf off and look at it under a 60-100 x microscope

this one is just like the one in the above post but it's at radio shack and it's 13 dollars cheaper and no shipping. it is also a 60x-100x with a light. it works great. only thing is the lube on the focus wheel seems to have worn off and it's a bit hard to turn but i guess it could be resin...

I've used a lot of different magnification devices.

The 30X jewelers loupe is my personal favorite.

The Scope that everyone uses is actually my least favorite thing to use.

it is true they are sort of cumbersome to use. how much is the jewler's loupe and where would i get one? i got the radio shack deal because it was right there. is 30x enough to really see the trichs? my main issue with the scope is i have shaky hands and it makes it hard to focus for more than about 2 seconds. once i find a good spot to look at trichs my hand moves and i have to start over. sometimes i will hold the bud with one hand and work the scope with the other. i hate touching the buds but wtf? is there a techique i am missing?

Yeah man I hear you.

I don't need the loupe as much as I used to.

You just learn the "look" of a ripe plant.

Thanks for all the helpful information. I have a 10X magnifying loupe and the 420 scope.

I assume a sugar leaf is one of the small ones on a calyx. Do you usually take them from a certain part of the plant? Top most cola, from the bottom? Does it even matter?

always from the top the top matures faster usually

Yeah, you want to check the plant in several spots to gauge overall ripeness.

Or you could do a staggered harvest where you cut the top/ripest buds and let the lower buds ripen up for a bit.

It works either way, good luck.

30x jeweler's loupe from ebay. $5 shipped or so. Anyhthing less than 30x's too hard to see. Anyhthing way too much, and hard to retain focus. I look at the trichs whiile on the plant. If I've had poor light penetration, I harvest in 2 cycles. The top half, then wait about 4 days for the remaining. Although I dont use the jeweler as my deciding factor on harvest time, it's a dandy tool worth the $5 for sure!!

Old thread i know, but hey... which ones aint? Maybe the new threads that are a repeat?!! Happy growings.

This is called a Carson Zorb Digital Microscope. I saw they at my local hydro store and they wanted too much money. I came home and found it on-line at Walmart for only $30 with free site-to-store. i should get it by the end of the week. it is a digital hand-held microscope with a built-in camera. it hooks up to your computer. No need to strain your eyes for us older guys. just look at the lap top and focus.
