if your talkiing about "seedling starter" from MG... dont even bother.. shit blows.. if your gonna go with MG the best suggestion i can give you wit that company is the Organic soil Mix.. its in a brown colored bag..should have it at walmart., that seed starting soil blows!

The only soil from wally world I have ever had luck with was the water retaining coir mix. Lightly organically fortified so less likely to burn but you have to add a LOT of perlite to it for drainage. That and in combination with smart pots plants in coir mix blow up.

I have never had good luck with any "water/moister retaining mix" so I gave up on them and the only way I could use what I had was with a lot of perlite. Almost any light seed starter mix (not acid mix) should work ok, your only using a small amount before moving to the final container.

Absolutely correct!! Any non-acidic mix should be fine for seedlings and can be found almost anywhere potting soil is found and for cheap. ALWAYS ADD A LITTLE PEARLITE. Even if it looks like a enough add a cup or so for good measure.

Ok sounds good to me, I have a huge sack of perlite for my mushroom hobby so no worries there.

I still havent been to krogers but ill swing by there when i go pick up some soil for the party cups.

I normally do one bulk straw grow and the harvests last a year no problem but the straw is just a evil thing to mess with especially pasteurization. That and with straw there is maybe a small second flush but it is a true one flush wonder. So really considering coir with a bit of coffee grounds for nitrogen.

I have had great luck with Poo in the past as an additive but I personally have never done a straight horsepoo sub. Have you seen the "I grow mushrooms" series? very informative for new and old mycofans. Has RoadKill and someone else from shroomery in it too.

Oh and on other news got another smart pot, need more perlite tomorrow then hopefully will have it set up in a day or two here all this talk of smart pots I had to pick up another one today I am going to be using it on a plant I just put into flower last week, the only thing is I need to find some clothes pins for lst.

Im testing a hpoo/coir/gypsum substrate for my first bulk mono tub.

I cant wait to get all my supplies in and start growing. Im probably ordering more seeds from nirvana, i just have two and i like to have backup beans.

Yup monotubs and mycobuckets are what I use.

Eech yea need more beans dude. You don't know anyone in your local area to trade for clones? I am guessing that much at least do to your location note "zero tolerance state" which could mean anywhere in the midwest :P

i ahve to work with seeds because i live in ultra weed hell. all thats available is shitty mexican weed. If i want quality weed i have to grow it myself. Id love to work with clones so much hehe

Clones are the way to go I haven't germed a seed in nearly 2 years there is a good medical network in my area and there are medical conventions where I also meet people to trade genetics with I love clones soooooo much for one big reason. You know to the T what you are getting seeds even from the best breeders always have some genetics variables. But a clone you just need to ask "what was her mother like?"

Im thinking about making my second bedroom closet into a grow closet with a good light. It will be a while but im kicking around the idea since i live alone in a two bedroom.

I so wish i could deal with clones only. It would be a dream.

I ordered a Grand wardrobe from uhaul. Concord Dawn is the inspiration for this grow.
He has been doing good things with his box and i want to try my hand at soil for once.

As this thread develops i will add pictures and ask a zillion questions.

Question: what size pots and which kind is best?

JP
Cool. I'm using three 42w CFLs in a "Grand Wardrobe Box" right now - works great. Check out my current grow journal (https://www.rollitup.org/grow-journals/404334-wardrobe-box-grow.html) - I'm within a few weeks of my first harvest.

Can't really say what size pot is best, since this is my first grow in a cab this small, and I'm still trying to decide myself. Depends on your growing style, I would think. I've almost always done SCROG-style with a few plants, but decided to a SOG-type grow with smaller plants in this cab - just so I can test out more strains on any one grow cycle. I have twelve rooted clones vegging right now, so I'll probably run one more grow (with my current strains) under the CFLs before I upgrade to HID (and hopefully a bigger cab). The most plants I could conceivably grow in my box right now is eight (or nine, if I lose the oscillating fan) in one gallon pots...but if you're planning to veg longer than a few weeks then I would say four is probably the max # of plants you can fit. I've never grown low riders, though, so maybe I'm wrong about that. I'd be interested in seeing what your setup finally looks like.

Good luck, and happy growing:blsmoke:

An update:

I am seriously thinking about buying a 400W HID. I really want to get a good crop in before i move. I figure in a closet i can grow 5 short riders.
so this might mean i wont grow in the cardboard box and use a closet instead. i just have to figure out ventilation.
if anyone has any advice on a closet from let me know plz. Ill keep this thread going till i buy a light.

ventilation can be very tricky when it comes to closet grows.. my suggestion is to throw a box together and put it into the closet and leave the closet door open.. dont know your $ situation but thats just my 2 cents.. you can build a legit box with a low budget, just need to be creative.. but theres a million closet grows on this site im sure you can find some useful info.. but i like the idea, cardboard box is kind of a hazard, good luck bro
