first, I did not expect to see such a reaction over something I see as so insignificant.

I grew up on a farm my entire life, this is nothing out of the norm. I also lived in the city for along time...still nothing out of the norm. I grew up slaughtering cows, chickens and goats. Shooting rats, possums, skunk, coyote and fox. This is a different way of life...something the majority of people don't live through day to day. Point being, I don't knock your way of life...don't knock mine and head the warning I gave. It's simple.
I'd be willing to bet 9 out of 10 people who reacted negatively to this thread, are the same people who go out and buy blocks of rat poison the second they see a mouse turd. If you think that's a quick and painless death your delusional.
