What makes a bud smell good? never been able to do it

I have had some of the best smelling and tasting stuff out of HYDRO all this organic hype is just that only HYPE. I have done both and quality is indistinguishable. Yield and speed of growth however is not. Hydro all the way!

I have done both, and quality on both growing methods are prime... i'm not smashing on hydro, or what it can do. I am sure you grew some great shit. But i'm telling you, there is huge difference in taste and aroma between hydro and soil/organic. It like comparing a tomato from wal*mart, and one from the local farmers market.

Hydro buds = Commercial
Soil/Organic buds = Connoisseur

bravo man... bravo
this ? comes up so much I always give the same answer and I state IMO.
The first few days of the drying process in the most crucial imo. What I like to do to get the best taste/dry is to stop watering a few days b4 harvest if in hydro or a week or 2 b4 if dirt. And this would be after flushing. After the leaves droop and the plant starts wilting I uproot it (very easy in a dwc). I hang it in a dark room with good ventilation (no direct air on flowers) and just make sure temps dont go over 88 once the fan leaves are a little dry I trim it and set it out for another day until the flowers feel dry on the outside then I finish drying in brown paper bags (never sealed) till the stem snaps. After this its ready to smoke and or put in to jars and cure, I do both. This whole drying process should take about a week and a half or two weeks. I dont know exactly why this works so good but I have tried a half dozen other ways and few have worked this well and consistently.. I use to always harvest chop and trim the day they were ready with very inconstant results. but this slow death of the plant is better imo. I think the plant kinda eats its self using up more stored nutes and stresses some thus producing a lil more trichs this way but not really sure. She really knows her life is over and will give you all she has. Try and then post your results. good luck!

I'll try this method on an 18" 12/12 I'm about to chop. However, walking out of a county forest preserve with an entire 9ft plant intact is not an option...lol. TY for sharing!.

Great thread everyone. I guess all I can add is medium definitely affects smell/taste. I ran the same strain both in-ground and indoors last Summer, the outdoor has more of an earthy as opposed to sweet skunk smell/taste. Molasses will definitely affect taste, use too much and you will actually taste it with the first hit or 2. Some people like the flavor, while others do not.

Don't forget that the sun + soil = the bomb diggity.
Sun buds are always better imo.

Oh yeah, slow dry. I only trim off the big fan leaves not really touching any buds. Dry trim in 5-10 days and jar.
Trimming wet, I've noticed you get a less noxious odor. Dry trimming, you can smell the stuff as you're trimming it and it will only get more complex as it cures.

Drying may be the issue. I hang the branches/buds in a closed closet, probably around 8 ounces at a time. Last year I left the door open and had an overhead fan running, but in two days the buds were crispy....although they moistened up after jarring. I ended up having to introduce more moisture (a mistake) because after a week or 2 of burping they were crisp. In Nor Cal so we don't have much humidity

I left them in the closet 3 days, by then the stems were on the verge of snapping, been curing since. I'm wondering if I should ignore the crispness next time and let them dry out more, but then I'm afraid too much moisture will be gone and they won't cure

I trim all the way down to the bud before hanging, I've found it is ridiculously difficult to trim leaves after they are wilted around the buds, it's so much easier when they are freshly plucked and sticking straight out. At harvest I left all the lower popcorn buds and branches, I cut them all off last week without any leaf trimming because I plan on using it for cooking. I put them in a brown paper bag and they were wet for days. Totoally dry and crsipy now, but it just smells like hay, even though the buds are very sticky

I have had the same problem. The bud reeks on the plant and by the time it's trimmed dried and bagged up it's lost all its aroma. I like the mr green thumb technique and will let you know on some Purple Kush I'm about to harvest.

Cheers :joint:

Good article, and that is pretty much what have done. But no strong aroma.

Most of my plants had a pronounced skunk aroma, even during vegging. And now it's just gone

..for me , its usually too quick drying that kills the smell.

ideal slowdry would probably be as long as 14 days.

i take about a week for it (very arid around here)

I also like to add that when ever they feel crispy just on the outside paper bag them until the moisture redistributes. Kinda like this. a day or two out after trim until they feel a little dry on the outside NOT UNTIL THE STEM SNAPS. Then in to the bags. Usually for me in my climate its bags during the day and out during the night. Just like a juggling act. Doing this drys everything very evenly which is also very IMPORTANT. If the outside drys to fast you lose a lot of flavor imo. If you dry them until the stem snaps before any type of bagging or jarring to redistribute moisture will result in to fast of a dry and you will lose some flavor. Remember SLOW and EVEN

Actually just just a reg old bag seed back b4 i found attitude. Nice and purple but kinda small yield and this was also one I had drying prob w/. Man I wish I knew then what I know now...

Just pulled a Dynafem Cheese tho that has a lot of purple tinge to it. Shes 7days since I drained my tubs and has a pretty good cheesy lingering taste&smell. About 3-5 more days till she gets released. I try to work up a pic...

it sounds to mee like your not letting it dry completely... if you can still smell the clorophyll(green- earthy) after its been jarred... i let it dry so if i was to take a bud and bend it in half it will snap... to me then its ready for the jar and it only gets cured as long as its not empty =) lookin a buds for 2 months in a jar just doesnt work for me... My shit is bomb dried with a lighter str8 off the plant
