Drying may be the issue. I hang the branches/buds in a closed closet, probably around 8 ounces at a time. Last year I left the door open and had an overhead fan running, but in two days the buds were crispy....although they moistened up after jarring. I ended up having to introduce more moisture (a mistake) because after a week or 2 of burping they were crisp. In Nor Cal so we don't have much humidity
I left them in the closet 3 days, by then the stems were on the verge of snapping, been curing since. I'm wondering if I should ignore the crispness next time and let them dry out more, but then I'm afraid too much moisture will be gone and they won't cure
I trim all the way down to the bud before hanging, I've found it is ridiculously difficult to trim leaves after they are wilted around the buds, it's so much easier when they are freshly plucked and sticking straight out. At harvest I left all the lower popcorn buds and branches, I cut them all off last week without any leaf trimming because I plan on using it for cooking. I put them in a brown paper bag and they were wet for days. Totoally dry and crsipy now, but it just smells like hay, even though the buds are very sticky
