I want to find a growing mentor.

After seeing the premiere of Weed Wars, I'm starting to think I've maybe been a bit too safe and cut myself off from some potentially helpful relationships. I'm a legal California patient, but have been extremely cautious so far. No one knows about my garden except my wife and presumably, the people at the hydro store -- assuming they don't sell too many thousand dollar setups to people growing vegetables indoors.

I'd like to have a mentor who can help me channel my hard work into expertise a little faster than trying to put everything together by reading and then trial and error.

But I'm not sure where I'd meet someone like that. For example, I just went to a hydro store over the weekend and had a good rapport with the guys working there. They were about my age and seemed knowledgeable, but I know that sometimes people hang around those stores looking for info (narcs and such), and I don't want to say the wrong thing and look like I'm an asshole.

I've been to a couple grow classes at dispensaries, but many of the attendees seem like rank novices who've read and experienced considerably less than even I have. On the other hand, the teachers -- come to think of it, I did ask one guy about consultation and he said it'd be good if I came back to that class and we got familiar with one another, but I haven't been back after he called in sick and I got stuck sitting in an empty classroom until the official announcement.

TL;DR
I want a growing mentor. Do you have one or know someone who offers that kind of thing? How can I meet someone who can help me improve my grow in exchange for some extra help or a percentage?

Ive also thought the same thing many of times. The culture makes it hard to do unless you fall in the right circle. The forum is just to much info to consume and it takes time but to walk into someone elses garden and be able to see everything they do right from a right their point of view can make all the difference in the world. Just like following a DIY car repair guide on a car forum sometimes you run across things that are not able to be explained well over text but in person it would be a two second thing. The forum is the best of what we have for most of us though so we just have to utilize it the best we can cause it is a great resource just a lot to sift through.

Theres only so many books and documentaries. Ive tapped the video resources at least with the exception of that new Grow Like A Pro video from High Times. There is always more books i heard good things about that West Coast Masters book.

Concensus seems to be that RIU is a good place to get started, and based on what I've been able to accomplish with about 6-7 months of daily reading, that's absolutely true. And just like UB said, I've learned how easily I can be fooled as well.

So in order to get the answers to questions I'd never even thought to ask,
And to make connections that can provide untold opportunities,
And to get my hands onto 'elite' cuts, it seems NECESSARY to toss my hat into the ring.

I fully agree that discretion is important. That's the whole catch-22 of this inquiry, innit? But when it comes to patients helping patients, there's gotta be somewhere in 'real life' where I can turn. There's gotta be someone out there who'd appreciate a hard working helper and wouldn't mind sharing some of their wealth of knowledge in return. And for those who have been so lucky, you must've been in a similar situation to mine at some point.

Surely, someone out there can shed some light on how I can link up with a master grower!

So easy even a cave man can do it. Where noobs go wrong is thinking this plant is something other than a weed and giving into ancedotal evidence, snake oils that do more harm than good, light gimmicks and other nonsensical tricks.

I've been posting for over 12 years and still can't understand why some folks feel the need to screw up such a simple process.

You want to learn how to grow dont learn here at RIU. Spend time on regular gardening forums first to learn the basics of container growing, botany ect.... You will build a much stronger foundation to grow upon.....

Finding a mentor is not going to be easy, first issue is you don't know them!! or their growing style. The best way to find one is ask around, sounds odd but that's the way to do it. Make a good friend in the business and hit them up for possible people. You can learn from here you just need to be careful who you listen to. How do you plan on growing, how many lights ect. I have set up quite a few systems for Med patents who have little or no expearence and who have mobility issues. The best advice I can give you is keep it simple. Don't start using super this and really big this and humungous bud monster growth shit, get what I mean. Start with one brand of food and get a couple grows under your belt, for example Pure Blend Pro with Cal-mag and liquid Karma. Simple and easy to mix and feed.

There are some basic mistakes everyone makes and if you can avoid them you should do OK. Just off the top of my head

don't over water
Get a good Ph meter
don't feed too much to soon!!!!!
Don't put your light to close
Make sure you have good air circulation
Learn about gardening

Best of luck and keep asking questions

I appreciate the feedback I've gotten in this thread so far (woodsman in particular; I found out first hand about overwatering, the necessity of a good meter, not overfeeding, light distance and good circulation from mistakes in my first grow).

But nobody has directly answered my question of how they found a mentor and/or how I might go about doing that for myself.

I have, however, gotten a couple of PMs from folks who might offer what I need.

In order to get in touch with them, I went out this afternoon and bought a TracFone with cash and activated it online using TOR. In other words, the phone is 'totally' anonymous. I mention this because I want whomever reads this post to realize I'm not just some dummy out here posting up that I want help gardening for everyone to see. Rather, I've taken some precautions already so that I can move forward SAFELY in finding a mentor. I hope if someone suitable comes along and reads this, they'll realize that I apply a similar level of attention and precision to all my work.

Anyone in the Sacramento area:
If you need help, I will work hard in exchange for help and advice dialing in my own garden.
