i find the cheap grolux bulbs burn out real fast sylvanna grolux worst bulbs ever
the regular spectrum osram and philips bulbs last for years
i am using the philips adjusted spectrum PIA green power bulbs they seem good sofar, not sure they are worth the extra cost over regular sodium's though

if you only have 1 or 2 lights changing the bulbs when they lose 10% of their lumen output is possibly a good idea they should still last several crops before they lose any output at least a year of use on 12/12 .. i have bulbs that are about 4-5 years old working perfectly
if you have more than 1 or 2 lights losing 10% of the lumens would make little difference to the overall output if you have plenty of light on your crop to start with
a light meter would give you all the answers you need, you can rent them from photography stores etc they are quite expensive to buy

peace :)

Do the math...If a bulb is rated at 10,000 hours, 60 days of 12/12 is 720 hours or 7.2% of the bulb's life. 3 grows and you are at approx 78.4% bulb life, if the numbers were accurate to begin with.
So guys, what is the least % do you want to grow with? I think unlucky is right...after 3 grows I might send the bulb to the veg room or use it as a side light and not a main overhead grow light....IMHO.....or you can just keep using them and be mindful of how well the crops are growing. Good question :)

3grows and get new bulbs...simple as that....keeping them years.....he he lmfao........... so dam funny ;-)
Whats so funny is that you didnt read the OP's question. He asked how long did they last and not how long should you use them. lmfao indeed.

Well done for doing the math but again youre not answering the Op's question. If youre debating how long 'should' they be used for then the only real way to know is with use of a light meter. You can't rely on what a manufacturer states, they typically understate the useful life because they want you to buy more bulbs.

24,000 hours. This is the average life of the bulb. 5.5 years of 12/12. The bulb would lose alot of it's usefulness by then. I think 24,000 hrs is when the bulb burns out.

Here is one I plucked off a site.

Sylvania LU400/ECO EPA Compliant 400 watt mogul Base HPS Lamp

  • Operates on S51 HPS ballast
  • Universal burn position
  • Meets EPA TCLP criteria for non-hazardous waste
  • ET18 clear bulb with brass mogul base and glass insulator
  • Lumens: 50,000 initial - 45,000 mean
  • Rated average life: 24,000 hours
  • 2100° Kelvin color spectrum for flowering and fruiting growth
  • 1-year warranty

It should last a long time, but I don't think you are supposed to use your bulb until it burns out. By that time they are much less effective. I use mine for a year (some of the time on 12/12 some on 18/6). I get a new bulb every October.

If you know the answer why ask the question? As for keeping comments to oneself that would be contrary to the idea of a forum. As for the 'monkey boy' comment, how puerile to start name calling. Ignorant too, FYI chimpanzees are no more monkeys than you are, they're Apes.

He's just taking the first stupid answer someone throws at him.

Change bulbs every 3 grows, so what, once a year? That's a fucking waste of bulbs I say.

Hydro companies need a certain type of person to keep buying their magic sauces, potion, bulbs and cure alls. These people are without the intellect to ask meaningful questions. Like if bulbs are to be changed every 3 grows, does this matter if growing Indicas or Sativas? Sativas can take up to twice as long to finish as Indicas so just stating '3 grows' means nothing.

whatever ...

I run a 1000W HSP bulb for flowering and a 400W MH for vegging. In 7 years of pretty much 24/7 operation I have
replaced the 1000W bulb twice and the MH bulb 4 or 5 times. Even though the 1000W bulb only runs 12 hours a day
the HPS is much cooler than the MH bulbs which are much hotter.

I would count on HPS bulbs lasting for 2 years and I would plan on replacing the MH bulbs yearly. These numbers reflect 2
systems that have been up and running for a while. I always "lost" a bulb or 2 when I first set up the lights. For some reason
it is too easy for a bulb to flare up when first plugged in if you turn it on and off too much. So have your timer set up and inline
with the ballast before turning the bulb on. The fewer times you turn the bulb on or off manually the better.

Good luck, BigSteve.

I use 2 600's hps and i change my bulbs after every grow.always use grolux aswell.think for the amount bulbs cost (25gbp) why not?plus you lose the chance of having one blow out on you halfway through which is never good

its a very simple little test, and one you can do over time. use your hps and when you think you have had the best out of it get a new one but keep the old one. now you have 2hps...one new one not so new....set up 2grows...... but keeping the light only for that plant..2grow rooms...simple test..but you will be back telling me the new bulb is better....... i say thankyou and grow well an chow for now...................... ps its not so easy being unlucky ;-)
