I'm a Canon guy myself, but all that white balance stuff should be in your guide.right on....by the way i have a nikon d-3100, with standard lens, and a tamron macro.
As well, when you are using your ring flash and a cfl backlight, you are slightly mixing up your color temps, hence all the corrections you say you are having to do later. cfl's generally have a .3 magenta shift . . . but really it all depends on the temp of the bulb you buy... some shift green, too. As well, typically flash is a little bit bluer in color, kinda along the lines of open shade, so if you have a flash setting in your white balance, you might find you like your results better when switched over from a daylight setting.
I'm going to cut myself off. I nerd on photography like I nerd on weed. One is a job, one is a hobby for me. Both are fun, tho. If you have questions, feel free to hit me up as well. Later (oh, and that goes for anyone who wants to talk shop on taking weed photos) . . .
