I'm a Canon guy myself, but all that white balance stuff should be in your guide.right on....by the way i have a nikon d-3100, with standard lens, and a tamron macro.
As well, when you are using your ring flash and a cfl backlight, you are slightly mixing up your color temps, hence all the corrections you say you are having to do later. cfl's generally have a .3 magenta shift . . . but really it all depends on the temp of the bulb you buy... some shift green, too. As well, typically flash is a little bit bluer in color, kinda along the lines of open shade, so if you have a flash setting in your white balance, you might find you like your results better when switched over from a daylight setting.
I'm going to cut myself off. I nerd on photography like I nerd on weed. One is a job, one is a hobby for me. Both are fun, tho. If you have questions, feel free to hit me up as well. Later
