Drug test for welfare

A family with two cars (driving them >3000 miles a month seems a bit over the top but if so say so), that owns a home, takes vacations, is setting aside money for retirement while also saving for college tuition is doing pretty well imo - and yes, that's easily obtainable making $40k/year - hell they can even have cable TV, cell phones, and eat out of the house every now and then. This is the typical American... You can even sit at home smoking pot for 3 months of the year earning 30k and still afford this - ask Neo.

Yeah right. You aren't doing the math.

It's going to cost at least $200/mo in just license and registration fees, purchase costs, basic maintenance and replacing parts over time to have those two cars running. If they both get 20mpg, gas is $4/gallon, and one car drives 60 miles per day (30 mile commute) and the other drives 20 miles a day (errands, stay at home mom ferrying kids around), the cost of gas is $16/day. It'd probably be $500/mo in gas.

To take four people on a vacation is going to run you at least a couple thousand dollars, unless your idea of a "vacation" is wading through a swamp to dump some bodies for the mob. Say they're $5000 each, and the family takes two a year.

Now the costs for these things have already hit $8400/year for the cars and $10,000/year in vacations. They're going to lose at least 25% of their income to taxes, so they're left with $30,000/year. They now have $11,600/year left to spend.

Mortgages on a decent home near an area with decent jobs will run you $1000/mo. That's $12,000/year. Now they're out of money and just rang up $400 in credit card debt.

Now their two kids need college tuition saved within 15 years. Let's estimate the cost of college (including food, housing, transportation, books, and tuition) at $15,000/year currently, a degree being completed in 4 years. Let's estimate the growth of college costs at 10%/year. This means their college will cost 15,000 * 1.1^15 = $62,000 per year, and for all four years, that comes to $250,000 for one kid. For both it's $500,000. They would have to set aside $33,333/year to be prepared to pay their tuition given the above assumptions.

And they haven't even begun saving for retirement. It's generally accepted you need at least a couple hundred thousand to retire safely and comfortably. If they were to have $500,000 saved, they'd need to sock away $12,500/year for 40 years.

Well we're at about -$50,000/year. Try doubling that income to make this lifestyle affordable. This isn't even including the cost of groceries or cell phones or internet or cable or property taxes or home repairs or utility bills or health insurance or medical bills or any of that junk.

Wow... just wow... Again, this is the problem.

You are a champion of twisting words. And apparently, from looking at your last line, also a champion of just making shit up. Looking at your latest reply I've come to the conclusion you are somewhat delusional. I'm done with what has turned into your personal witch hunt of someone to blame for whatever problems you had/have. Whatever god you pray to and whatever god I pray to will sort us out later. Peace.
You're right, I'm making assumptions. Explain to me how you work more than twice as hard as the rest of America while only be compensated for a fraction of the effort? What did you mean by that? Why do you do it?

I'm blown away that you think you're honestly using unemployment.

Gastanker, if Neo is filling the applications out correctly and with no intention to defraud, how is this either illegal or disallowed? cn

Wait, CN, you think unemployment is in place so people can take an annual 3 month paid vacation? I've never filed so I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure there are measures in place to prevent this. If not, we should be discussing how to reform the application process versus drug testing.

If this is somehow legal, it's still pretty dishonest to me and from what I understand most of the people I've ever talked to.

Wait till it hits the news - "Government sponsoring annual three month vacation for the rest of your life! Check correct boxes and never have a guilty conscious." Yikes, gives me the shivers.

That is not what I am saying, nor is it truly germane to my question to you. I am not commenting on perceptions of appropriateness but on your statement that what Neo is doing is illegal. If he filled the forms out correctly, disclosed all necessaries and got approved, i accept that as prima facie evidence of legality and propriety. If you can disagree using the law and not your own beliefs regarding the ethics of the situation, I'm all e-ears. cn

Oh, you're assuming he filled the forms out honestly. I'm not... call it a character judgement. You're right though, I have no proof to either.

Any lawyers here know if you can file for unemployment without looking for work? I would assume the answer is yes... but I would still assume neo didn't fill out the forms honestly.

I have no reason to presume he did it illegally. Are you really telling me that you're defaming Neo's character (definite) on a belief of illegal claim (assumed)? Dude. You need to relax and almost certainly apologize to Neo. Innocent 'til proven guilty, and all. My opinion. cn

You should read this:

They're trying to stop it but it's up to each state.

you very well could be. it's a distinct possibility, especially considering you didn't know about farm subsidies

how old are you?
I know quite a bit about farm subsidies. I just can't figure out what they have to do with unemployment...

Wait, why? What has he told me to suggest he's honest? He's claimed to work 266% harder than the average American, at a fraction of the pay, while relying on annual unemployment to provide for a lavish lifestyle, while doing nothing to change the situation nor having any intent to change the situation.

I take offense to most all of that. I think he defamed his own character.

By all means I retract my statement that he's committing a crime - I have no proof of this.

Gastanker, be fair.
I just spent time re-reading most of the thread. To bolded 1, what Neo said was that he works harder in 9 months than most do in two years. That is not quite congruent with the bolded. Also, since those nine months are per annum, the % part of the bolded actually averages to 200, if we're gonna play quantity with an obviously qualitative statement.

As for bolded 2, how possibly does appx. $25K a year for a household suggest a lavish lifestyle? Imo you are a bit caught up in your passion regarding this subject and forfeiting objectivity. That is still no good reason to have smeared Neo the way i see you to have done. Take a deep breath and think on it. In my considered opinion you offered Neo unwarranted offense, and you owe him a sincere and unqualified apology. cn

Oh you got me again. Lavish is a bad word as it suggests wealth to a degree. A three month vacation when your broke is more like: Careless, indolent, lazy, indulgent, informal, nonchalant, relaxed, unconcerned... I guess those work more accordingly.

Did I smear Neo? I just think he needs a slap in the face. Might help him. I would say the same thing to my siblings.

What give u the right to pass judgement on anyone? And no u cant file for unemployment without lookin 4 work, it proves just with that statement that ur talkin out ur ass, 1st u must be fired from ur job or laid off to collect EDD, u can't walk in there quit and go collect money, if u think u can ur even dumber than I thought. Then the max time u can get EDD is approx 2yrs. Next if your employer contests ur EDD saying that they had good reason to fire u like u were stealing or sumptin ur EDD will be denied as well. With all that said I don't know you from a hole in the ground, but I'll pass judgement on u and say ur a 40 year old virgin who's only GF in ur entire life is that patch of rabbit fur u tape a pic to and hump every night, now that isn't fair of me to say, is it? However true it might be.

Wait, so you're saying that Neo is illegally filing... So didn't you just pass the same judgement I did? Based on the exact same presumption? :wall:

I assumed you couldn't file without looking for work. Neo said he files and yet does not look for work... Read.

Sorry, file yes u can file for EDD without lookin for work, u just get denied its a process u have to go thru 4 the state if ur tryin to get assistance, they also at random will make u fill out this thing with info on where u applied for a job at, but that's if u get approved for EDD, but just filing doesn't mean u get the unemployment. And I was calling u a 40-year old virgin, not Neo.
