i came across this thread because im considering a canine for security as well and for you(moebius) to make that accusation is outlandish and fucking stupid! i know lots of people who own dogs for many reasons with security being one of them and they dont even grow! so i guess they must be doing something wrong too huh? news flash kid, not everyone is spoon fed with a golden spoon and lives in the hills where crime like B & E's and home invasions never happen. throw plants in the mix and you are a prime target.

let someone break into your home and hold up your family at gun point over a few plants and you might think a little differently about not having a dog. where some of us live, its a reality. not the bullshit YOU watch on tv. your as cynical as you are stupid. go be a trolling keyboard warrior somewhere else. your un-rivaled buffoonery knows no bounds..

yes he a russel, my neice has his sister, she is the one on the left the one in the middle is from a different family but he matches the color sceam and fits right in, they protect there grow tooIMG_20120212_115523.jpg

i like the last pic of the pit... beautiful dog man! does anyone recommend any particular breed for a good companion/ watch dog? ive considered a pit but im worried due to the stigma surrounding them and my home owners insurance will be null and void if i own one. and i also know that its negligent owners that make pits vicious and violent, not pits them selves which really sucks a big one! but, what are ya gunna do?

im considering a german sheppard due to their protectiveness and high intelligence/ trainability. any thoughts are appreciated!

Having grown up with german shepards, I believe you'd be hard-pressed to find a better watch dog.
Incredibly intellegent. With a little obediece training, their capabilities are endless. Raised around children, they are as loyal and protective as they get.
The females tend to have less tolerance for bullshit, which can better suite them as gaurds, though still make an ideal family dog, too.

We got really lucky with ours, we picked him up from the animal shelter-a guy had turned him over due to moving and couldn't keep him, but only the first 2 or 3 days, had a couple pee accidents, but that was it. I even bought him a package of the 'training pads', and he did use one to shit during the night, but about the fourth day, started coming and sitting to look at us to indicate he either wanted a treat, or outside, which we could determine by asking him LOL.
It only took a week or so, and he learned just by calling him or telling him 'stay in YOUR yard' where the boundaries were.
The only time he has had an accident inside in over 3 years is when we ran out to the hospital, and didn't quite click the door from the garage closed all the way.
He nudged it open, I guess to look and see if anybody was still upstairs, and the door closed behind him trapping him upstairs.
You could see where the poor guy had totally tore up the door, frantically scratching trying to get it open to let himself back out, and you know, you just feel sorry for him and can't get mad..... even as you're scrubbing the brown stain on light tan carpet:lol:

I also have two full-bred German Rottweilers who are two of the biggest softies you'll ever meet but are vicious to intruders...my friend (been over plenty of times) tried walking into my yard one day w/o notifying me to come chill and they checked him real quick as he tried hopping the fence...he said he's never been so scared in his life haha i will post pics of them later today don't got any saved in my phone

Russells are one of, if not THE most intelligent of our friends with fur.
I always accuse mine of not being a dog, but a short person with fur :)

I like when I have him on a leash out somewhere people get out of my way...
I like when people come down to our house and see him they have to decide if selling bibles is that important...

If those are the criteria you want, look up "Akita"
I had one as a kid, that's how I learned about them.
Great with kids, very docile, but also very territorial and protective.
My dad had a friend with one that was pushing 200 lbs. (mine was only 180), and he had this strange (albeit funny) habit of laying under one tree in the front yard, basically unseen unless you knew him, and he knew you.
There he would lay waiting for the unsuspecting visitor to walk up the walkway, then sneak up behind you, and if he didn't know you, would snort so you would hear him, then as you turned around, stand on his hind legs so he could put front paws on your shoulders.
If you didn't evacuate your bowels and the yard, he would sniff, decide if he liked you or not, and just wait to see if you panicked.
But the Akitas are bred for hunting bear in Japan, have big square heads like pits do, and unknown to most, are also able to lock their jaws also.
Frequently seen with leashes on (to obey leash laws) but carrying it themselves, or laying down in the park free to roam about, with the owner paying little if any attention to his whereabouts.
Mine used to just lay there and look at me like 'do something about this......' when my infant cousin would come visit, and climb on him or pull his ears.
